September 2018

In August, the Peoples' Self-Help Housing team celebrated "Becoming One" with an all-staff retreat at River View Townhomes in Guadalupe, CA. Staff members heard from the Executive Team, participated in an inspiring activity with inspirational speaker Jeff Thompson from PEAK Learning and enjoyed other group activities.

September always brings the excitement of the start of the academic year and here at PSHH with our newly expanded Education Program, it's no exception.  Every day over 300 students are now  benefiting  from our 11 site-based Learning Centers, the newest of which is at Casas de Los Carneros in Goleta, where we celebrated a grand opening this week.

So why is an affordable housing provider so deeply committed to education? Here's why. For economically disadvantaged students enrolled in school districts where PSHH have developments, only 35% are reading at grade level by third grade; even worse, that percentage falls to 13% when those students are also English language learners.

These sobering statistics stand in dramatic contrast to the inspiring outcomes children enrolled in our educational programs experience. While all of our students come from low income families, and 93% are English Language Learners, 83% of our third graders read at grade level.   If a child can learn to read well by third grade, they are 90% more likely to graduate high school, more likely to go on to higher education and more likely to escape the crushing bonds of inter-generational poverty.

Just last week I received word that two cherished supporters  will be making a combined $60,000 investment in the students at Los Carneros. I can't tell you how much excitement there was in the office at that incredible news, but more importantly how our hearts were touched when we pictured the children and the families whose lives these amazing gifts will assuredly change.
