HOMEGROWN POETRY
Skye Blaine, Poetry Editor
Naked in the Sand
Shawn Langwell

Pudgy bottom boy
no more than two or three
Chasing birds along the sandy shore
His parents, stroll not far behind,
Hand in hand in silent adoration
Sandpipers scurry chasing
After the receding waves, to feed on worms and crabs.

Up among the dunes
Huddled beneath a blue umbrella,
A woman in a bonnet beside a handsome fella
Her eyes drift toward the naked child, marveling in pure delight
At the child full of glee and running wild
No care or worries of life’s demands,
just a young boy running naked through the sand.

PRODIGAL SON
Jon Jackson

I was the prodigal son.
And when I came home,
Honestly, to give of myself,
And to care for another,
That other was my mother,
And I saw no fatted calf.

She begged me,
To bring her drugs,
To overdose,
Since I was a physician.

And I said No.
And, instead, listened
To her left big toe,
Ingrown, inflamed,
Her constant strain.

And I dug into that,
Literally, as a physician,
With nothing but my hands,
And a simple instrument.

She yelled at me,
This woman who never knew me,
This mother of mine,
With no fatted calf.

And I relieved her pain.
