Training Fleet Switches to Unleaded Fuel
|
San Carlos Flight Center is proud to be the first flight school at SQL to switch our entire training fleet to run on Unleaded Avgas. Our maintenance team installed STCs for all of our training aircraft to run on unleaded UL94 Avgas available on the field from Rabbit Aviation. For more information about UL94 or to see a sample of what UL94 looks like, ask the Front Desk or your CFI.
We have been working toward this day for over 6 years and are excited to help reduce the impact of leaded fuels from aviation on the environment. This is absolutely the right thing to do for San Carlos Airport, San Mateo County, and the SF Bay Area. We are proud to finally take this positive step for our community.

New Airplane Parking Spots
|
As the San Carlos Flight Center continues to settle into our new club location, we are accumulating more parking spots in South Tower Parking and moving more of the SCFC fleet closer to the office. This is good news for members.
Starting today, the Cessna 152s and the Archer will be moving to South Tower Parking. See the bulletin board in the office or the aircraft key tag for the new parking locations. Reminder: airplanes must be returned to the spot they were taken from.

Come enjoy the sunshine on our ramp area with some great food on Saturday, September 25, from 12 PM – 2 PM. Bring your family and friends, as we’ll feature plenty of distanced outdoor seating for your party. Grab a burger and a hot dog, see how good your preflight skills are with a preflight challenge from our maintenance team, and cool down with some refreshing drinks before or after your flight. Have fun with activities for both kids and adults alike!
The event will take place on our ramp, outside of our hangar. You can enter through our office. All are welcome! Please RSVP here so we can get an accurate headcount for food.

Club Office Closed on Labor Day - Sep 6
|
The club office and maintenance hangars will be closed for Labor Day, Monday, September 6. For members looking to fly, be sure to make your reservation by 3pm on Sunday, September 5, to make sure your keys will be placed in the afterhour lockbox.
Please take photos of the start and end Hobbs and Tach times and email them to info@sancarlosflight.com with any applicable CFI time as well. Thank you and happy flying!

You sometimes hear "a good landing is one that you can walk away from" but shouldn't we aim for better? Let’s talk about setting up for a great landing. A great landing begins with a great stable approach. What is meant by that and why is it important?
A critical factor in the stable approach is a stable pitch. The stable pitch will yield a stable airspeed. After a stable pitch has been established, the next factor to consider is how the airplane descends to the runway. With stable pitch, power is used to manage the glide to the runway. Power should be stable with small, purposeful adjustments to keep the plane gliding to the aiming point. Once there, any remaining power can be reduced as the roundout occurs.
What happens when too much power is used and the pilot then “chops” the power to idle on short final but way before ground effect? Chopping the power causes the stable nose attitude to vanish, which subsequently results in a loss of airspeed. All these things result in a significant energy change in the plane. With all this instability, it is going to be hard to predict where the plane will touch down. With that significant energy change ("chop"), the end result is unpredictable. The airplane could drop to the runway, or a significant amount of power may need to be added back to make the runway, or the airspeed could drop excessively leading to a stall. None of these will impress your pilot friends or passengers. Instead, all of these add risk to your landing. Don't do it.
If you are struggling with finding a stable approach, contact the Flight Center, 650-946-1700, and schedule a lesson with one of our landing expert CFIs.

IFR Charts: Jeppesen vs. Aeronav
|
On Saturday, September 18, Assistant Chief Pilot, Brain Eliot will lead a discussion of Aeronav and Jeppesen charts and their application and use in IFR conditions. While the charts may look very similar on the surface, Brian will dive into the similarities and differences between the two, and how you can get the most use out of them as a pilot.
Tune in to this livestreamed FAA Safety Seminar here. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of both of these chart providers, and make a more informed decision on which to use whilst flying IFR.

SCFC: How long have you been a Private Pilot?
MM: I passed my Private Pilot checkride in June this year, but I have been a pilot inside my own head for decades.
SCFC: What was memorable about your flight training journey and the area in which you learned to fly?
MM: I am an entrepreneur, and I am accustomed to highs and lows. But the highs and lows of flight training were unexpected: the sadness of cancelling a lesson because of the fog, or the excitement of my first solo landing. I knew I was going to have to work to get my license, but I didn't realize it would be such a personal growth opportunity.
|
SCFC: What brought you to San Carlos Flight Center?
MM: I was referred by a friend who studied here years ago to get his ratings. And I live in San Francisco, so I needed something north of PAO! Of course, what brought me here is not what keeps me here. Nowadays, I'm here for the free donuts. :)
SCFC: What is your next adventure in aviation likely to be?
MM: I am the quintessential eager newbie pylote: I have way too many adventures planned. My husband, daughter and I are heading to SoCal next month to visit friends, I'm working toward my mountain checkout (if only the mountains would stop burning), and I am working on buying my very own spinner. Then, I have a few more ratings to achieve.
|
SCFC: How has being a pilot affected other aspects of your life?
MM: I have been in awe of the patience and support exhibited by my husband through my studies. Despite the many weekend days we spent apart over the past year, the experience has brought us together. My license has opened a new category of adventures to him, my four-year-old daughter, and me. In middle age, it's fun to unlock a new achievement that creates a ton of new possibilities. Flying is keeping us young (although I can't show you the reg on that).

Recap of Upwind End-of-Year Event
|
Over 50 people came together last Friday evening to congratulate the Upwind Class of 2020 and 2021. This event celebrates the accomplishments of these next generation of pilots. It brings together the students, their family, the SCFC instructors and staff along with the San Carlos aviation community. These students have completed the 9-week intensive ground and flight training Upwind summer program.
|
Over the next few weeks they will be taking their checkride and we have no doubt that they are well prepared to pass. This innovative program is made possible by the generous support of the Bay Area aviation community. It was a great way to end the summer.

Crisis at Reid-Hillview Airport (RHV)
|
Opponents of Reid Hillview Airport are using leaded fuel as an argument to try to shut down the airport. A couple weeks ago, the County Board of Supervisors voted to close the airport by all legal means necessary prior to the FAA grant expiration date of 2031. Now, it is up to the FAA to decline to agree with the shutdown of RHV.
Find out how you can support RHV here.

FOG Lunch: Monterey - Sep 12
|
Did you know Monterey has a new restaurant on the field? Woody's at the Airport opened their doors earlier this year, and is now Monterey's newest airport restaurant, complete with outdoor seating on top of the airline terminal giving patrons a great view of the ramp and runway. On Sunday, September 12, join the FlyOutGroup as they visit the restaurant to try it out!
Plan to park at the Del Monte Aviation FBO around 11:45 AM, and then walk five minutes east to the terminal. The restaurant will be located up the stairs after the check-in desks, but before security. If you are interested in attending, please book your plane and RSVP here.

Airport of the Month: Boonville (D83)
|
Situated far from any major urban centers, Crescent City (CEC) is surrounded by numerous nature and scenic areas. With the Redwoods State and National Park twenty minutes away, this is a great destination for pilots to fly into, grab a rental car, and explore the sights. Whether you want to view some of the world's tallest trees, hike the rugged coastline, or just want to visit a new airport, Crescent City is a great gateway to numerous hidden gems in California.
If you go, consider sharing a PIREP with the Flight Center, and we may feature it in our FlyOutGroup newsletter.
