On
Tuesday, August 30, 2016,
Save Venice Inc. celebrated the completion of the restoration of Paolo Veronese's 16th-century organ loft in the church of San Sebastiano.
The celebration featured welcome remarks by Father Gianmatteo Caputo
, the director of the office of Fine Arts of the Archdiocese of Venice, and Emanuela Carpani, director of the Superintendency of Fine Arts and Monuments of Venice, and a presentation on the organ loft's restoration by Superintendency art historian Amalia Basso.
Save Venice Chairman Emeritus Randolph H. Guthrie gave remarks in tribute to Julio Mario Santo Domingo, a longtime supporter of Save Venice, and in gratitude to
Andrés Santo Domingo and the Santo Domingo family, who were in attendance. Mrs. Beatrice Santo Domingo, who served on the Save Venice Board for many years, joined her sons Andrés and Alejandro, and their wives, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Charlotte Wellesley, respectively. Lauren has been on the Save Venice Board since 2012.
Guests enjoyed a concert featuring the newly restored organ with a performance of works by Handel and Vivaldi by soprano Liesl Odenweller and organist Nicolo Sari.
The restoration of the organ loft marks a milestone in Save Venice's nine-year campaign to restore the church of San Sebastiano, which is almost entirely decorated by Veronese. Conservation of
the church's high altar and presbytery paintings is currently underway thanks to the generous support of Richard and Nancy Riess.
Later this fall, work will begin on the church's exterior with the restoration of the main and lateral facades, thanks to the continued generosity of Mrs. Beatrice Santo Domingo.

With the support of Save Venice, students and professors from the
Istituto Veneto per i Beni Culturali restoration school spent their summer term diligently working to restore the cherished Sotoportego di Corte Nova in the sestiere of Castello in Venice.
Although the ornately decorated underpass
had fallen into a
disheartening state of disrepair, the results of the students' efforts were immediate and the Sotoportego has been completely transformed.
Layers of dirt, grime, and unsightly overpainting were removed, revealing gilding, colorful marbles, jewel-toned painted trim work, and brilliant white istrian stone. The rotten wooden panneling on the walls of the underpass was replaced and finished with a natural wood stain. The lighting fixture of the Sotoportego was also repaired, guaranteeing that the underpass will be illuminated at night. Click here to read more about the history of the Sotoportego.
Removed in the 1990s due to their poor condition, the four votive paintings originally located in the Sotoportego were also restored by the students in 2015 with funding from Save Venice with generous support from Matteo and Monica Carlotti. These paintings are now permanently displayed in the nearby church of San Francesco della Vigna, and weather-proof photographic reproductions were installed in the Sotoportego.
On Thursday, September 15, 2016, a large enthusiastic crowd gathered to celebrate the restoration of this local landmark. On Wednesday, September 21, 2016, Renzo Ravagnan and Laura Martini from the IVBC restoration school will feature this restoration at the Rosand Library & Study Center at Save Venice. Save Venice Inc. and Friends of Florence Collaborate to Restore Works in Venice and Florence: Restoration of Maestà Completed in Venice

The restoration of
the Maestà by the Maestro di Badia a Isola (c.1290-1320) at the Palazzo Cini Gallery in Venice has been completed
and this extraordinary panel painting can once again be admired by visitors to the collection.
Once covered by thick overpainting from previous restorations, the vibrant blue hue of the Virgin's mantle and many intricate details have been recovered. The most crucial element of this conservation effort was the stabilization of areas of flaking paint that threatened to cause irreparable damage to the painting's delicate surface, which is now protected for many decades to come thanks to this successful restoration.
The Maestà will be featured at the Conversazioni d'Arte lecture series at Palazzo Cini on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 6:00pm.
Restorer Claudia Vittori will also present this restoration at the Research and Restoration Roundtable at the Rosand Library & Study Center at Save Venice on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.
As announced earlier this year, Save Venice and the Friends of Florence
Foundation are
collaborating in 2016 to
restore works of art in the respective cities of both organizations in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the two devastating floods that struck Florence and Venice in November 1966.
These restorations are generously sponsored by
Richard & Jill Almeida, with additional support provided by the Boston Chapter of Save Venice.
