The one Maine windjammer to routinely venture outside of State waters, the
American Eagle,
visited Cape Ann twice this year, in June while on our Stellwagen/SailBoston trip and again over Labor Day weekend.
The Mayor's Race for the Esperanto Cup was a hoot; unfortunately we were early over the line which is how the excellent picture above came to be taken. Not many vessels stay ahead of the Columbia (as you can see in Ellen Bank's video) for long! Then we headed back across the Gulf of Maine with enough sea and breeze to douse the mainsail at three in the morning. The schooner Adventure won this time..but there's always next year for our try # 32 for the Esperanto Cup!

Timing is everything. That boat project from last winter/spring is close enough to done (no boat project is ever done) to put her in the water in time for our last three fall cruises. She'll be on the side davits when we next head out. |
The leaves are starting to change with the first cool night and sunny days, thank goodness.

Cruise News
It seems to be the season for the
American Eagle to appear in calendars. The North Haven dinghy "Cappy" we take with us is the November pinup in WoodenBoat's
2018 calendar, with Justin at the tiller and the schooner in the background.

Pictures from here The annual Maine Windjammer Association Photography Contest closes soon. Get your entries in and the chance to win a trip on a schooner of your choice. Make a good choice if you win! Shary has conquered the technological challenge of connecting a short clip Joe Flood took when he and his family were aboard.
And of the moment, Buckley Smith rowed into the cove this morning from his Salmon Troller, Sweet Chariot; and he left this sketch of the Cadet alongside the American Eagle. Thank you! |
Postcards from away Randy and Sally Knight sent this from Europe's smallest post office, with a name few can pronounce: Isafjordardjup on Vigur Island.
