Paint Your Heart Out

Paint Your Heart Out is an annual service project done in collaboration with Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity and heavily supported by local contractors, tradesmen, businesses and service clubs.  Each year, a number of houses are painted by volunteers for homeowners who need a helping hand.  It was initiated in the spring of 2014, designed to help elderly, disabled, and needy residents while beautifying Punta Gorda. PYHO does more than paint homes.  It sends a message of pride and builds a sense of community spirit and unity that lasts long after this day of service is over.  As such, it has been endorsed by the City of Punta Gorda.

Spotlight on our Platinum Sponsors

PUNTA GORDA'S HOSPITAL SHINES UNDER THE BAYFRONT HEALTH BANNER

New Bayfront CEO Drew Emery
Bayfront Health Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte are both strategic parts of a regional network of seven hospitals and more than 70 clinics along the I-75 Florida corridor. Platinum sponsor Bayfront Health Punta Gorda is a 208-bed facility offering an award-winning, accredited primary stroke center, Joint Commission Certified Joint and Spine Academy, an accredited chest pain center, and emergency care center. The hospital also provides on- campus adult inpatient psychiatric care at Riverside Behavioral Center and comprehensive rehabilitation and wellness services in a separate facility.

This proud home town hospital opened in 1947 as sixteen bed non-profit Charlotte Hospital; the result of community wide fund raising. Originally championed in 1938 by Dr. Walter B. Clement, a local physician, it took years of fits and starts to get the idea off the ground. At long last, by the end of World War II, nearly every resident was taking part in making the dream of a Punta Gorda hospital become a reality. In addition to private donations, funds were raised through community events of every description. The establishment of a non-profit private corporation known as the Charlotte Hospital Association, Inc. helped spur the fund raising campaign.
The next several decades brought continued expansion and several pivotal changes in ownership. During the 1960's, the hospital became the first in Charlotte County to receive accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO) and its physical expansion continued. The hospital name was changed to Medical Center Hospital and by the close of the decade the entire facility had been given to the Sunbelt Adventist non-profit Health System. During the next several decades the hospital continued to expand its services, renovate, innovate and develop under the direction of visionary for-profit owners. The hospital was re-named Charlotte Regional Medical Center in 1994 to reflect its growing identity as an award winning regional care center. Current owner Health Management Associates moved the hospital's thriving comprehensive cardiac care program in 2012 to sister hospital, Peace River Regional, where a state-of-the-art cardiac care wing had been completed. Two years later, HMA re branded both hospitals with the Bayfront Health identity.

Andrew "Drew" Emery was named chief executive officer of Bayfront Health Punta Gorda this summer, a homecoming of sorts, as he previously served as chief operating officer from 2010 to 2013. Most recently Emery was CEO of Florida's Shands Starke Regional Medical Center.

TEAM asked Bayfront's new CEO what he envisioned as the hospital's major challenge in the years ahead as our community grows.

"To meet the growing needs of our community, we have expanded services by adding six specialty physicians and providing patients the option to have a ligament-preserving total knee replacement implant", says Emery. "The care we provide was recognized with designation as a Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) hospital, Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) for the third year in a row, a three-year term of re-accreditation in mammography by the American College of Radiology (ACR), and we were named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission. This all took place in the last year alone. How do we maintain these advancements, certifications and designations, as well as further grow and expand our reach? Therein lies the challenge. We need access to a sufficient workforce. And not just your traditional physician and nurse, we need health care workers that will practice at the top of their licenses, doing what they do best to help the healthy stay healthy and help those with chronic conditions learn to manage."

When asked what it is about TEAM's initiatives that have earned the hospital's support, Emery said, "Bayfront Health Punta Gorda is pleased to support TEAM Punta Gorda's work that helps foster a better community, especially through the Free Bicycle Loaner Program. Since it was started in 2010, Bayfront Health Wellness and Rehab Center has been proud to be one of six stations to provide bikes for more than 5,000 riders from 43 states, five provinces of Canada and 14 countries. Good health encompasses mind, body and spirit - areas that TEAM Punta Gorda's programs serve. Together, we can make Punta Gorda a healthier place to live, work and play."

Message from TEAM CEO

Nancy J
Hi everybody

HELP TEAM PAINT THE TOWN

Almost every charity in town is gearing up for this year's Giving Challenge event on September 20
th and 21
st, 2016.

The Giving Challenge is a twenty-four hour, noon to noon, electronic fundraising challenge from the Sarasota Community Foundation. Each dollar from a new donor is matched two to one by the Patterson Foundation, and every gift over $25.00 is matched at least one to one. Your $25.00 gift can be turned into $50 or even $75.00. It's a great opportunity to leverage gifts you plan to make to your favorite local cause.

TEAM Punta Gorda will dedicate this year's Giving challenge donations to a great project, Paint Your Heart Out Punta Gorda (PYHO). This perennial project kicked off in 2014 and will return for a fourth season in February 2017, when 100 volunteers will team up to paint 8 houses for needy owners in one day. This year, we are raising funds to allow us to help repair some of these homes, as well. We've found that some of the homes referred to us for painting, are not in good enough condition to withstand even the pre-painting pressure washing. Last year, Gulfview Construction donated the repair of one elderly lady's home, but we'd like to be able to do more. Most of our recipients are either elderly or disabled and cannot manage repairs or improvements without assistance.

Partnering each year with Charlotte Habitat for Humanity, we accomplish a lot using very limited funds. By taking advantage of the 2016 24-hour Giving Challenge, we hope to maximize fundraising for the PYHO initiative. This year, Charlotte State Bank & Trust has kicked off the giving by stepping up as the Signature Sponsor. If you'd like to support this great project, there are two ways that you can help us raise money as well.

First, you can make your reservation to attend TEAM Punta Gorda's
"Painting With a Purpose" Cocktail Party
from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.
on September 20, 2016,
in the garden at
Trabue Restaurant in downtown Punta Gorda.

Attendees will be given the opportunity to paint a masterpiece of their own in an open air class led by our local Painting With a Twist franchise, who has graciously offered to partner with TEAM Punta Gorda in this Giving Challenge fundraiser.  Chef Keith Meyer of Trabue has donated the venue and will be serving up some delicious hors d'ouevres while our local Habitat for Humanity partners and TEAM Punta Gorda leaders share information about the Paint Your Heart Out project.

We'll also have a cash bar and various paint-themed activities to entertain and amuse our guests.  It's an evening of fun you won't want to miss!  Space is limited, so contact the TEAM Punta Gorda office at (941) 637-TEAM today to make your reservation.

Can't attend the Painting With a Purpose Cocktail Party?
You can still maximize a personal charitable donation
with a credit card between noon September 20
th and noon September 21
st
and selecting TEAM Punta Gorda as your charity of choice.

Businesses or individuals may also adopt a house to sponsor, and individuals who want to participate physically in this project can volunteer their time to lend a hand to the Paint Your Heart Out project. Punta Gorda is a special town with a strong ethic of service and participation. Support the charity of your choice by taking advantage of the Giving Challenge opportunity on September 20th and 21st.
