Welcome to the latest edition of "News from the U", our monthly newsletter! Thank you for being a part of Body University's fitness family. Now, let's dive in!

September Training Focus: RPE

Last month, we focused on core and bracing. This month, we’re focusing on RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to help you get more out of your sessions at BU. RPE is a simple way to measure how hard a set feels and whether you’re choosing the right weight. For most working sets, we’re aiming for about an RPE 8, meaning you finish your set feeling like you could have done about 2 more good reps with solid form. If you finish and feel like you could keep going, it may be time to grab a heavier weight. We're here to spot you!

New Friday Evening Classes!

We’ve added two new Friday evening classes at 4:30 and 5:30 PM with Sabrina! Fridays are Upper Body, so if you can’t make it in earlier in the day or want to get your workout in before the weekend starts, you’ve got two more chances. They’re live on the schedule now, so book your spot!

Body U Does Pilates

We’re switching it up for another team field trip. Join us Saturday, September 19th at 11:30 AM for Body U Does Pilates at Powerhouse Pilates Clairemont, led by BU member and co-owner Brigette Guido.

This isn’t just any Pilates class. Brigette brings serious expertise (500+ hours certified, plus Barre and strength experience), and she knows what our lifters need.

Why mix Pilates with your strength training?

  • Better core strength = stronger, safer lifts
  • More mobility = deeper squats, better positioning
  • Improved posture & control = fewer injuries, better muscle engagement

When: Saturday, September 19th at 11:030 AM

Where: Powerhouse Pilates Clairemont 4696 Clairemont Mesa Blvd San Diego CA 92117.

Led by: Brigette Guido — BU member & Power House co-owner

Spots are limited! RSVP now and claim your spot. Book on our app!

How and when did you find your way to Body University?

I trained at Xplicit fitness back when BU was attached, and I always admired the ladies that trained at BU - did not think I could do all those things back then. Trainer Sydney actually invited me to work out at BU when they first moved to the La Mesa location back in 2022. I joined the A team that summer and I never left! This has become my main workout of choice.

What do you enjoy most about working out at Body University?

I love the environment of support BU provides and how much we encourage each other in everything- how much we lift, life events, etc. Shout out to my amazing 5:30am crew, they keep me showing up and even do wellness checks when I forget to tell them I’m out of town… it’s been so cool to have built friendships along the way.

What fitness achievements are you most proud of since joining Body University?

I am most proud of the progress in my strength and being consistent with how I show up for myself. I use to think I could never lift as heavy as I do today. And I had a hard time being consistent with how I ate and my workout schedule. BU taught me a lot about discipline in my life from eating a balanced diet, working out consistently, and even impacted my professional life.

If you could do one exercise for the rest of your life what would it be?

I would do the Leg Press! But the booty builder belt squat is slowly becoming my favorite.

We like balance here at B.U. So what's your ultimate cheat meal or guilty pleasure treat?

I love all food, but my guilty pleasure is alcohol. I love grabbing drinks with friends, and my drinks of choice would be champagne or vodka sodas! I try to only have drinks once a week to help balance it out.

Francine's Finds

This month’s find is The Meal Prep Company! I stopped by their storefront and picked up a few meals to try. Super convenient and yummy. They have plenty of high-protein, macro-friendly options. You can order online or stop by their storefront and grab what looks good. Definitely worth checking out on those weeks you just don't feel like cooking.
