COVER CROPS IN THE NYC WATERSHED

It's that time of year again! With corn starting to be harvested across the Watershed, cover crops are gearing up as well. Many participating farms will be planting a cereal grain after harvest of corn silage. With corn maturing earlier this year than the average, it's looking like better conditions and opportunities for planting cover crops. Farms have their cover crops designed with planning staff and work with them directly to certify the cover crops. Watershed farmers are once again working hard to ensure water quality protection and promote healthy soils! Learn more by watching the video below!

WATERSHED FORESTRY INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS

After two years of going virtual, we were so happy to be in person again for the 2022 Watershed Forestry Institute for Teachers at the newly renovated Taconic Outdoor Education Center in Cold Spring, NY. Twenty-three educators gathered for 5 days of learning, adventure, and connection in the woods and waters of the NYC Watershed. Highlights included building forest-filters and sampling for macro-invertebrates in in the pouring rain, exploring indigenous environmental perspectives with Wild Hudson Valley and the Redhawk Arts Council, and singing a teacher-crafted song about the water cycle around the campfire – accompanied by ukulele, of course!
