Had great fun last week with not one but two dates for our Hungry Ghost Explorer - we added an extra one to cope with demand. Two tours with the same name.. but almost completely different content! | | |

Arranging "festival" visits is always a gamble as there is rarely a published schedule of events (which is probably why few others try!).
But it all worked out for the best despite our minivan overheating (!).. as we had ringside seats for the puppet show on Monday.. and were invited behind the scenes at the Chinese opera on Friday.
The festival continues till 14 September 2023 at locations around Penang.
Look out for our Nine Emperor Gods Festival visits in October!

This is a good one if you have recently arrived and are looking for the best places to buy fresh produce (and a whole lot more!). Want to join but date doesn't suit? Local News - Hungry Ghost Festival continues.. | | |
|
is observed during the 7th month of the Chinese Lunar calendar - this year it started on 16 August 2023 and will continue till 14 September 2023.
During this period the Gates of Hell are opened to allow the hungry ghosts out to roam the earth looking for food and entertainment. It's not a good month to get married or move into a new home - and some drivers even signal left when they are turning right (or vice versa) to throw loitering ghosts off-track!

Look out for people burning paper money in front of their homes and also for the temporary tents and stages that spring up during the month.
The effigy makers are busy making paper statues of the God of Hell to which devotees will make offerings of food and money to stop the restless spirits causing too much trouble. There will be performances to entertain them too - including puppet shows, Chinese opera and modern singers - you are welcome to watch but don't sit on the red benches in front of the stage - those are reserved for the ghosts! After a few days there will be a grand send off as the effigy is burnt - then the tent and stage will be taken down and erected somewhere else nearby.
