MEM CEO Jim Owen Helps Build Futures as Campaign Chair for United Way

Missouri Employers Mutual President and CEO Jim Owen recently kicked off the community campaign for the Heart of Missouri United Way. 

This year, the campaign goal is $3 million, and Owen is serving as community campaign chair, helping to lead the efforts of a network of campaign volunteers that when combined, donate more than 10,000 hours annually. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Building futures, together.” 


MEM has a long history with the Heart of Missouri United Way, and over the past 27 years, employees have given more than $1 million to the campaign. Read More.

BRIDGE the Gap: Comprehensive Learning Program

“Comprehensive approaches to learning that includes both the families and teachers increases student attendance, decreases office referrals, and ultimately, increases their grade reading scores. These reading scores are significant benchmarks for long term success, high school graduation, and workforce opportunities. Day of Caring and Other Service Projects

Many local businesses and organizations completed service projects at local agencies or packed wellness kits as part of our annual Day of Caring.

Cummins Sales & Service donated $2,000 worth of after-school snacks to the Boys & Girls Club! This was part of a larger grant awarded by Cummins that also provided back-to-school supplies to Columbia Public Schools.

Boys and Girls Club: Bus Driver


Boys & Girls Club of Columbia is looking for a bus driver beginning Sept. 5, 2023 throughout the school year. This unique position is a mere 2 hours each day, but is a highly impactful one as it provides the opportunity to experience high-quality programming to all, regardless of background or income. Volunteer Bus Drivers are responsible for ensuring kiddos are delivered safely to the Club each day after school. Pick-up times are based on school dismissal and typically range from 2:30 pm-4:30 pm.

Love Columbia: Driver

Occasional errands, pickups Deliveries or rides for clients


The volunteer in this position would be called occasionally to pick-up or deliver items around town on behalf of Love Columbia clients who do not have adequate transportation, or give rides to clients needing to get to and from appointments. Driving opportunities would typically be weekdays during business hours, and each opportunity would be at the approval of the driver. Drivers could use their personal vehicle or a vehicle owned by Love Columbia. Criminal and DMV background check required.

Give 5 is a social program that matches innovative volunteer opportunities with retired (or almost retired) baby boomers ages 60+ who live in Boone County. Each Give 5 Class meets 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. one day a week for five weeks, visiting more than 20 nonprofits over the course of the program.


Expect to have fun, make new friends, and learn about volunteer opportunities that match your talents, passions, and personality.

Agency Spotlight: True North

True North of Columbia has a Victim Services program funded through our Health and Basic Needs impact investment. This program helps keep victims of domestic and sexual violence safe and reduce the negative impact the violence has had on their lives, empowering victims to heal and thrive through education and support.

The goal of True North is to provide all victims with safe housing, advocacy and support. This advocacy and support may encompass initial contact through continuous counseling, protection, housing assistance, and appropriate legal actions.

The 2023 Heart of Missouri United Way fundraising campaign is off and running.
