As kids are brushing up on their ABCs this fall, we want drivers to do the same.
Remember:
- Be Alert when driving in school zones. Watch for kids, follow the speed limit, and obey all "No Parking" and "No Stopping" signs.
- Don’t Block a school’s fire route, even if it’s “just for a few seconds." In an emergency, those seconds can make all the difference for first responders.
- Watch for Crossing guards. Their stop signs have the same legal authority as a stop sign at an intersection.
Don’t forget, when you stop for a crossing guard, you must remain stopped until the guard and children have finished crossing the entire roadway – not just your lane. Breaking this law could mean three demerit points, increased insurance rates and a fine of up to $500. More importantly, it could mean seriously injuring a crossing guard or a child.
Let’s all work together to make this a safe and happy school year.
