Labor Day

Labor DayAs August comes to a close and families return from vacation, there is still one great summer tradition: Labor Day weekend! Did you know that the first Labor Day was celebrated in Boston in 1882? Today it is a national tribute to the contributions that all of us have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Shipyard Strikes in Poland

SolidarnoscAugust is also an important month in the history of Poland. On August 14, 1980, workers in Gdansk, Poland, took control of the Lenin Shipyard. They demanded better pay and the right to form a union free from government control. The massive strike also saw the rise to prominence of labor leader Lech Walesa, who would be a key figure in bringing an end to communist rule in Poland.

Polish Artist Andre de Krayewski

Andre de KrayewskiWhat a fun honor! Recently, famous Polish artist Andre de Krayewski surprised us with a painting dedicated to Piast! Do you like modern art? In English, the words roughly translate to "True and satisfying is kielbasa from Piast." Andre de Krayewski was born in 1933 in Pozan, Poland. Find out more about Andre and take a look back at a career that spans half a century.
