Monthly Musings

September is the month where changes of weather, routine, and attitude take place. It begins not only the season of autumn but the season of change. On the East Coast, September is the month that concludes our summer vacation and brings forth a new school year. It is a time where the weather is still warm but begins to showcase the cold weather that is soon approaching. The September stone, Sapphire, is used to protect loved ones from envy and harm and attracts heavenly blessings. This is a great time to reflect on who you are and what new changes you wish to make. Take the time to make memories with your friends and loved ones and enjoy the the beginning of the beautiful fall season.

How To Choose Your Timing

During this time of transition from summer to fall when we have been completing those things on our to do list after summer breaks and vacations, I want to address timing on a deeper level.

Timing is everything. You can do the right thing at the wrong time or the wrong thing at the right time. Both don't work very well. But how do you know when it is the right time to say something, do something, call someone, go somewhere, or accept an invitation? We determine our actions based on what information we have at the time and then make the best decision.  So why do we sometimes miss and wish we had done something else?

I think it's a matter of listening to the non-verbal cues and what your own intuition tells you. When you are deciding what course of action to take, pay attention to how you feel at that time. Are you uneasy, unsure, is your stomach queasy? Or are you feeling strong and settled inside your gut when you are ready to take action? Pay attention to the cues and at the first sign of uncertainty, stop and analyze your options. What is bothering you about this decision?  Maybe you need to sleep on it and wait another day if you can.

When you take action and learn that your timing was off, this is a great opportunity to review what you did and determine what you can do differently next time. Our best decisions come from our school of life, so learning from previous decisions can only help you in the future.

So what do you if you have an opportunity right now in the moment, you are unsure and there is little time to reflect?  This is the time to take a deep breath, spend a moment by yourself,  and visualize the possible outcomes from your decision.  This sounds so easy and like such common sense, but in the moment when you have to act now or never, it's not so simple.  Taking those deep breaths and asking yourself some questions  or getting another opinion if there is time, can make all the difference in making timing work for you.
