NEW Cigars
Foundation Cigars Menelik
Wrapper: San Andres Mexico Binder-Nicaraguan Corojo 99 Jalapa
Binder: Esteli, Condega, Jalapa
Filler: Nicaraguan Corojo 99 Jalapa
The cigar’s richness takes a cue from its namesake, Menelik, the ancient emperor of Ethiopia, who was said to be the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Menelik was also known as Ibn al-Hakim, which translates into “Son of the Wise Man.” It’s easy to see the familial relation between the Menelik and Foundation’s award-winning debut brand, El Güegüense (The Wise Man). Both possess a Corojo 99 binder and touches of dessert-like sweetness that come in waves. The Menelik is a soft-box pressed petit robusto that measures 4 1/2 x 52. The slightly pressed characteristic of this cigar- a quality it also shares with the Wise Man Maduro- lends itself to a more flavorful smoke with a consistent draw. As a finishing touch, it also features a pigtail, or culita, cap.
Tatuaje
Mexican Experiment II
Wrapper: San Andres
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Mexican wrappers are something you don’t see coming from Pete Johnson too often. The first was on a super limited Monsters release, and the second came in 2011 with the limited regional line, the Mexican Experiment.
The Tatuaje Mexican Experiment II (or ME II) features the same anatomy as the original, a Mexican San Andres wrapper over Nicaraguan binders and fillers. Available in four sizes, this cigar is a powerhouse and a classic expression of Mexican tobacco flavors. A solid core of earth and chocolate is joined by pepper, wood, coffee, and clay, and features extraordinary complexity and a long, rich finish.
Dunbarton
Sobremesa Brûlée
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade G2BW
Binder: Mexican Matacapan Negro de Temporal
Filler: Nicaraguan
In recent years, there's been a resurgence of sorts for the Connecticut wrapper and many blenders are finding a use for it, even on their heartier cigars. When Steve Saka crafted Sobremesa Brûlée cigars, he switched gears; his goal wasn't to appeal to bolder palates as others have done. Instead, he focused on making a classic cigar even better through quality tobaccos.
His wrapper for this Sobremesa is a silky blonde Ecuador Connecticut. Underneath, there's a diverse mix of leaves: Mexican Matacapan for the binder, and Nicaraguan fillers from Esteli, Condega and Pueblo Nuevo. Brûlée serves as a Saka time machine, bathing your taste buds in lush, creamy smoke filled with notes of cedar, nuts, leather, and a gentle spice.
