🌍✨ Launch of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) Perioperative Nursing Preceptor Program ✨🌍

We are proud to celebrate the launch of the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) Perioperative Nursing Preceptor Program in Tanzania. 

This two-day workshop equipped perioperative preceptors with the knowledge and skills to support students from the MNH Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery Services’ Perioperative Nursing Training Program, set to launch in October 2025.

The launch marks a historic milestone: for the first time, perioperative preceptor nurse training is conducted at this scale in Tanzania. By preparing a cadre of trainers, standardized knowledge and practice will cascade to future generations of nurses, expanding reach, strengthening systems, and creating lasting impact.

Special recognition to Ruth Palmeri (UCSF), Erin Brenner (UCSF), John Meshack (MNH), Nira Matunda (MNH), and MNH’s operative team.

This is only the beginning. Together, we look forward to advancing surgical nursing education and strengthening health systems in Tanzania and beyond.

Global Nursing Certificate Program 🎖️

January 13, 2026 - March 31, 2026

The UCSF Center for Global Nursing is excited to announce that our Certificate in Global Nursing will return in 2026. Designed for nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs), this 12-week program builds the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to address priority challenges in global nursing, while fostering collaboration, equity, and innovation across diverse health systems.

Through expert-led sessions, case-based learning, and a vibrant peer community, participants strengthen their leadership and practical tools for impact at the point of care and across health systems.

Registration opens in late September 2025, with tiered pricing for UCSF staff/faculty/students and LMIC partners.

Kim Branciforte, MSN, RN, PHN

Pediatric Outreach Educator

UCSF Benioff Children's 

Kim serves as the Pediatric Outreach Educator at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Franscio. In this role, Kim partners with hospitals across California to customize and strengthen pediatric expertise through education.

Kim is also deeply committed to advancing global health. She has contributed to agricultural development in Belize, disaster relief in Puerto Rico, and pediatric clinical care in Guatemala. She has been deployed through the National Nurses United Registered Nurse Relief Network and currently serves on the Education Steering Committee of Health Volunteers Overseas.

As a 2024 CGN Travel Award recipient, Kim worked alongside staff at Sonja Kill Memorial Hospital in Kampot, Cambodia, delivering hands-on education in pediatric specialty care. She also completed the CGN Certificate in Global Nursing in 2025, strengthening her foundational knowledge in global health, equitable partnerships, and cultural humility.

We are proud to celebrate Kim’s leadership, dedication, and impact in this month’s CGN Member Spotlight! 

Nurses and advanced practice providers play a pivotal role in improving global population health. CGN's Global Nursing Impact Series offers a platform to highlight their leadership and impact in advancing health equity and to promote collaboration on these initiatives. Each session will feature a 20-minute presentation by invited speakers, followed by a Q&A.*

The lecture series is held virtually on the second Tuesday of each month and starts promptly at 7:00 am - 7:30 am PST/4:00 pm - 4:30 pm CEST.

Perioperative Nurse Course in Dar

Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), with support from the UCSF Center for Global Nursing (CGN), is launching a five-month Perioperative Nursing Course for registered nurses.

This course, the first of its kind in Africa, provides an opportunity to establish high and consistent standards of perioperative nursing practice for operating room nurses. The blended program of weekly theory sessions, skills labs, and supervised practice builds competence in perioperative assessment, sterile technique and safety, team communication, and protocol-aligned standardized care across orthopedic, obstetrics and gynecology, general and gastrointestinal, pediatric, ophthalmology, ENT, dental, and urology. The course is open to all nurses, with OR nurses especially encouraged to apply.

Pediatric Volunteer Opportunity in Laos

Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is the only hospital in northern Laos that provides specialty pediatric care, offering free services to underserved families in the region. It focuses on improving access to essential health services while supporting sustainable healthcare through training local providers. Volunteering offers a meaningful way to contribute to the hospital's mission and make a difference in children's lives.

Lao Friends Hospital for Children accepts applications for medical and nursing volunteers throughout the year. All individuals interested in volunteering should be able to spend two months at LFHC during their first visit. Anyone interested is welcome to send their resumes to hr@fwablaos.org.
