In this newsletter, you can expect to find opportunities, events, and other information about UCSF nurses, advanced practice providers, and our global partners working toward global health solutions.

Nurses and advanced practice providers have historically been undervalued and underutilized in global health, yet they comprise the majority of the global health workforce. The Global Nursing Impact Series aims to provide a platform for leading nurses and advanced practice providers to share the impact that they are making in the field of global health through research, advocacy, collaboration, innovation, and more. Invited speakers will present for 20 minutes followed by a 10-minute Q&A session. Registration is open to the general public. 

The lecture series will be held virtually on the second Tuesday of each month and start promptly at 7:00 am - 7:30 am PST/4:00 pm - 4:30 pm CEST.

2024 CGN Cultural Humility Course

Register now for our final 2024 classes!

We received great feedback from last year's participants and are excited to continue to offer our 3-hour introductory course on cultural humility for all UCSF nurses, APPs, and faculty. Cultural humility is the cornerstone of all global health work and our expertise on this topic is essential to optimize equitable partnerships and cross-cultural collaborations.

CGN members are required to take this course. Register using the link below if you have not already done so.

Our own UCSF nursing/APP faculty and staff are facilitating the course. Looking forward to seeing you there!

There is no cost for the course at this time. 3 CEUs will be provided.

We review applications twice per year March & September. 

Applications are evaluated based on the project's sustainability and efforts to collaborate with local partners.

GICS Wound Care Survey

Pediatric Wound Care Survey

The following survey is an attempt to find out how best nurses care for Pediatric Acute and Chronic Surgical Wounds in your countries. This survey is designed to collect evidence from nurses about wound care.

This survey is brief and should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete.

The results of this survey will be used to create evidence-based guidelines and recommendations that can be used by nurses around the world to improve wound care for children.

Your input is essential in making this happen, and I hope you will take the time to participate.

Your responses will be kept anonymous, and your participation is completely voluntary.

The results of this survey will be published on the website of the Global Initiative for Children's Surgery (GICS) and the International Society of Pediatric Wound Care (ISPWC). By participating in this survey, you will be helping to improve wound care for children everywhere.

Mardochee Val, MSN, CRNA

Nurse Anesthetist Supervisor | UCSF Health

Mardochee Val is a Nurse Anesthetist Supervisor at UCSF. She is of Haitian descent, with both of her parents hailing from the island of Haiti. Born in Boston, MA (home to the third largest Haitian community in the US), Mardochee lived in Haiti until she was 3 years old.

Mardochee graduated from nursing school in 2008 and had the pleasure of educating Haitian women in their native tongue during her community health rotation. Mardochee has also served as co-chair of the CRNA DEI committee and has helped facilitate DEI-focused training and discussions within her department prior to her current role as the CRNA Supervisor.

At CGN, Mardochee has been able to put her bilingual abilities to good use while mentoring Haitian Emergency Nurse Practitioner students for a partnership between UCSF and Partners in Health. Mardochee has always been proud of her heritage and has a deep-rooted passion for helping people.

Seed Grant Program

A New Funding Opportunity honoring Nancy E.

Adler’s legacy of supporting research on

social determinants of health

The Center for Health and Community in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is pleased to share a new request for pilot research proposals. The Nancy E. Adler Seed Grants Program (ASG) will support projects focused on social and behavioral determinants of health. Annual budgets should not exceed $25,000, and total budgets should not exceed $35,000. Proposals will be considered on a competitive basis through September 16, 2024. This opportunity is restricted to UCSF postdocs and junior faculty. SF Bay Area Opportunities

The Roving Community Health Initiative is a team of UCSF clinicians (RN, NP, PA) who work alongside community organizations and volunteers to provide vaccinations, wound care, and harm reduction in San Francisco, primarily in the Tenderloin and South of Market. Most of the work is on "roving teams" serving our unhoused and marginally housed community members.

Shifts are paid but voluntary and on top of your regular position at UCSF. RCHI covers your time (including OT when applicable), so your home department is not charged.

You need manager approval to pick up shifts, and shifts should be fine with your home department schedule.

Regular opportunities are:

• Thursday and Saturday 
• 11 am to 4:30 pm (5 hours paid after 30-minute break deducted)

The first hour of each shift includes prep and orientation for newcomers. Clinicians go out in pairs to work together and support each other. Newcomers are paired with somebody with experience.
