Dear Fellow OA Member:
Staying home this weekend?
This weekend you might say there will be two categories of Overeaters Anonymous members: those who are in attendance at the 2016 World Service Convention and those who are not. If you are going to the Convention, you are promised a memorable experience that will have a far-reaching impact on your program (so they say).
If you are not going to the gathering of more than 1,000 OA members in Boston, not only are you are in the majority (one of the 59,000), but you have an opportunity to do service that is vitally important.
You
are the one keeping the doors of OA open for the newcomer. The newcomer doesn't know about "The Convention," but may have heard about local meetings in his or her area and decided to check one out this weekend. Will the doors be open, will the hand of OA be extended, will the still suffering compulsive eater feel the hope when "Our Invitation to You" is read?
If you don't normally go to a meeting on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, consider putting one in your schedule -- there are nine meetings to chose from. Make an extra effort to try a meeting you have heard about and said "one day I'll go to that meeting." If you have a weekend home group, how about getting there early to help set up. This Labor Day weekend, be the one to make a difference in someone else's life and it is sure to make a difference in yours. Open your arms, offer acceptance, and welcome the newcomer -- which we all were at one time.
"If you decide you are one of us, we welcome you with open arms. Whatever your circumstances, we offer you the gift of acceptance. You are not alone anymore. Welcome to Overeaters Anonymous. Welcome Home!"
(From OA's "Our Invitation to You")
My hand in yours,

Ocean & Bay Intergroup News
All OA members are welcome to attend Ocean & Bay Intergroup (OBI) meetings held the first Tuesday of the month at St. Patrick Church, 2068 Cranston Street, Cranston, RI. The next meeting is
Tuesday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m., with literature sales at
7 p.m.
Women's Prison Initiative: OA brings meetings to the Women's Prison twice a month. Are you interested in doing this great service to women who otherwise don't have access to recovery from overeating? It requires a background check and a commitment to give two hours a month to this outreach service. Send an email with your contact info to oceanandbayoa@yahoo.com.
Workshop Feedback: First, a great big thank you and a hug to Faith (who led the organizing) and all others who put time, effort, and love into the special afternoon event, and to our Region 6 Trustee for making the trip from Canada to carry the message.
A survey was sent to all who attended the July 31st "Empower Your Program" workshop and we could read their email address (68 out of 88, not too bad). Thank you to the 30 of you who completed the survey. This is very helpful in planning our next workshop. It's not too late to let us know your thoughts -- send it to oceanandbayoa@yahoo.com or complete the survey you received via email.
New Home Base: Not quite yet! Intergroup is still working on finding a new location to meet that is centrally located, handicapped accessible, and will allow us to have a storage cabinet. Do you know any such space?
Region 6 Assembly: On September 24th, Kara, Sandra, and Jay will be representing Ocean & Bay Intergroup at the Albany, NY daylong meeting. Many thanks to them for their service.

One of our members, Faith, wrote some beautiful lyrics to Bette Midler's song, "Wind Beneath My Wings." Here is a teaser and the link to the complete lyrics.
WIND BENEATH MY WINGS
Life was so cold before the Program
I never had sunlight on my face
I was content to stay behind, that's my way
I always walked a step behind.

Step, Tradition, and Concept of the Month
|
|
STEP 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
TRADITION 9 - OA, as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.
CONCEPT 9 - Able, trusted servants, together with sound and appropriate methods of choosing them, are indispensable for effective functioning at all service levels.
*STRUCTURE
is the Spiritual Principle of the 9th Tradition.

From two longtime members
Do you have the same food plan and how has it changed over the years?
PD -
For the most part I do have the same food plan. For me, I've found sticking to foods that work for me helps me to feel physically better. As I reached maintenance I've been able to slightly increase my protein and then I found I needed to cut back on my evening protein because I felt too full. OK, another miracle!
JMPD -
Yes, I have a food plan and in the beginning it was quite structured. Over time I relaxed food restrictions and measured amounts. With an injury two years ago I returned to structure as I did not want to gain weight. Presently I weigh and measure many meals, omit high sugar items and am mindful of when I eat processed or whole grains. I do not use artificial sweeteners, no longer chew gum, or consume caffeine products.
