A New Way to Support

June is National Pride Month. September is Virginia’s Pride Month. And October is when we learn about LGBTQ+ History. But the work we do at Side By Side? It doesn’t happen only when it’s most visible or fashionable. It happens every day.

When it comes to our youth, when it comes to our mission, every month matters.

That’s why we’re thrilled to announce “Every Month Matters,” a new ongoing giving campaign designed to help meet the monthly needs of Side By Side. Our goal is to build a community of monthly donors giving at least $25 a month to provide the steady, reliable support that allows us to keep showing up for LGBTQ+ youth every day of every month.

We know what that support makes possible:

  • $30 provides snacks for one evening of Drop-In programming, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for our youth.
  • $100 provides one free, identity-affirming mental health counseling session for an LGBTQ+ young person.
  • $150 provides a hot meal for youth attending a support group, helping meet their basic needs while building community.
  • $520 supports one week of facilitated groups where LGBTQ+ youth can find connection, affirmation, and belonging.

Your monthly gift of $25 adds up to $300 a year. When an entire community commits to giving consistently, that individual gift becomes the cornerstone of dependable funding to keep our services available month after month.

We also believe in celebrating the people who make this possible. So, we are excited to share a few special thank-yous along the way:

  • After 3 months of recurring giving: Receive an exclusive Side By Side tumbler.
  • After 6 months of recurring giving: Receive an invitation to an exclusive reception celebrating our donors.
  • After 12 months of recurring giving: Be entered into a drawing for a special experiential prize.

Pride has a month. History has a month. But our commitment to LGBTQ+ youth? Twelve months a year... because Every Month Matters.

A Message From Our Executive Director

As we celebrate Virginia Pride, we’re reminded of the leaders, changemakers, and advocates who came before us and helped pave the way for the community we have today. Pride is both a celebration of that history and a reminder of the work still ahead of us.

Our Executive Director, Marquis Mapp, shares some reflections on this Pride season, the legacy of those who came before us, and what’s ahead for Side by Side as we continue working to build a stronger future for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults across Virginia.

Z.J.W. v. King George County

A recent lawsuit involving students seeking to establish a GSA in King George County has brought renewed attention to the role of LGBTQ+ student organizations in schools.

Gender & Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) are student-run organizations that bring LGBTQ+ students and their allies together to build community, find support, and advocate for change. And they don't all look the same. Some GSAs focus on social connection; others provide peer support, and some take an activist approach to improving their school climate.

At Side By Side, we help schools and students create new GSAs and strengthen existing ones, with resources and support for everything, from developing a GSA's goals to creating more affirming school environments.

Help Keep Your Recurring Gift Going!

We’ve updated our donation processing system! We’re excited about this change, but recurring donors will need to take action to continue monthly gifts.

Recurring monthly donors must re-enroll their monthly donation information via our new platform to make sure support continues without interruption.

Recurring monthly donors have already been notified directly of this change, but if you have any questions, please contact Jason Elliott, Director of Development and Community Engagement.

Thank you for your continued support of LGBTQ+ youth and families across Virginia!
