Wendell Foster Residents Meet the Thunderbirds

Wendell Foster residents experienced the full Top Gun treatment at this year's Owensboro Air Show! 😎 Residents were invited to a meet-and-greet with the Air Force Thunderbirds, the Air Force's premier air demonstration team. The Thunderbirds perform in air shows across the country, showcasing their elite skills and demonstrating the Air Force’s premier multi-role fighter jet, the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Residents watched the Fighting Falcon in action during a practice run of the Thunderbirds' show, and then had the opportunity to meet the pilots and get their autographs. 🀩 It was an amazing day filled with blue skies and jaw-dropping views. We can't wait until next year's Air Show!

Thank you to the Air Force Thunderbirds for your service to our country, and for giving our residents an unforgettable experience! ✈️

Sensory Park Refresh

Wendell Foster has recently made some much-needed improvements to our all-accessible Sensory Park. The Sensory Park opened to residents and the public in 2009 and is used almost daily! With over thirteen years of wear from outdoor elements, some components of the park needed to be replaced or updated, specifically our shade structures and picnic tables.

The canopies, which have become well known as the Wendell Foster β€œKites,” provide a great amount of shade in the sunny park. 🌞 This is critical because many people we serve are prescribed medications that can cause sensitivity to the sun. The canopies allow individuals to enjoy the great outdoors without the worry of sunburn.

Wendell Foster is happy to say that new canopies, along with a new, hexagon picnic table, were funded through the PNC Foundation Grant. We are so grateful for the support we continue to receive from our community partners, which allows us to make these much-needed updates on campus. Check out these new updates to the park during your next visit to Wendell Foster!

Thank you, PNC Foundation, for being a Difference Maker! πŸ’™

It's Back!

Wendell Foster's Yard Sale πŸ›οΈ

A favorite community event at Wendell Foster is BACK for this fall! Our Fall Yard Sale will be held October 13th from 7:00 am to noon in the Young Building at Wendell Foster. The yard sales, organized twice a year by our Recreation Department, support Wendell Foster's Christmas Fund. The fund ensures that each Wendell Foster resident receives Christmas presents during the holiday season. The Spring Yard Sale raised a record-breaking total of $3,266.24, and we know the Fall Yard Sale will be just as successful! Interested in donating items to the yard sale? All donations, except clothes and shoes, will be accepted. Large items such as decor and furniture are welcome!

Donations can be dropped off at the Young Building. Items will be accepted October 10th to October 12th, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. For assistance in unloading, call (270) 683-4517.

John and Greta Visit OCTC πŸ“š

At Wendell Foster, our Person-Centered Specialists ensure that those we serve participate in activities that match their unique interests. John and Greta, two Wendell Foster residents, expressed an interest in learning more about Owensboro Community & Technical College. Sasha, their Person-Centered Specialist, arranged a tour of OCTC's library and the TRIO Student Support Center. The TRIO program offers academic and personal support for students with disabilities, as well as those who are first-generation college students and individuals who are income-eligible. John and Greta got a firsthand look at the many services provided by the library and TRIO, and even participated in a mini class on reducing stress through breathing exercises and other techniques. "John and Greta loved experiencing the college life," said Sasha. "They had so much fun!"

Thank you to John and Greta's Person-Centered Specialist, Sasha, for coordinating this visit with the help of her mom, Becky Hodskins, Director of TRIO Student Support! We are so thankful for our dedicated staff and community members who support our care recipients in living their best lives. You are #WFDifferenceMakers!
