The Century Challenge Winners
The Century Challenge concluded on August 31st! Participants were asked to complete 100 of something – running 100 kilometres, picking up 100 pieces of garbage, and so on.
We are delighted to report that participants ran, paddled, picked up, and helped neighbours throughout the month – and had a darn good time doing so!

“I love to run, and I never really kept track of how far I went each month, but the centennial challenge kept me motivated and on track. I wasn’t sure I’d make 100km, but it encouraged me to get outside and push just a bit more each time. Thanks Camp Kawartha for putting this together and helping me celebrate your 100 years in a memorable way.” Fiona Lasenby

Prizes were offered with the sponsorship of Lynn Woodcroft of Royal LePage FRANK Real Estate! We extend a warm thank you to Lynn for supporting the Challenge in this way!
The Grand Prize of $100.00 and a Camp 100th Anniversary Hoodie went to Carlotta James!
First Runner Up, winner of $50.00 and an Anniversary ball cap went to Fiona Lasenby
Second Runner Up was Gord Fallen who won $25.00 and an embroidered Anniversary badge.

Thanks to all who participated! All the participant names will be engraved on a beautiful wooden plaque which will be mounted in the Camp’s Dining Hall – for 100 years, we hope!!

The Environment Council Tour
Guests learned the basics of shoreline naturalization!
Guest shoreline guide, Victoria Readings of Clearwing Ecological Gardening & Restoration, reviewed what had been done at both our woodland and sunny slope planting areas and highlighted the many values of a naturalized shoreline.
The two shoreline gardens have demonstrated their worth. The native plants with their strong, mature, spreading root systems, are stabilizing the shoreline slopes and reducing erosion. This helps protect lake water quality by trapping sediment and nutrients in storm water runoff -- reducing sedimentation of fish habitat and slowing the growth of invasive aquatic plants and algae.
As well, Victoria pointed out that the plants for the two sections of shoreline were selected to provide shelter and natural food sources for land-based animals, birds, bees, and butterflies, and for their attractiveness and resilience to climate change.
Guests were so keen to learn all they could they stayed for two hours!
A huge thank you goes to Lois Wallace from the Council who organized the whole event. As well, we thank Victoria for taking time out of her busy schedule to share her experience and knowledge with all present.

KIWANIS CLUB VISITED CAMP AT CLEAR LAKE
Visited the Boys' Camp as Guests of the Rotary Club — A Program of Sports.
HOME TOMORROW
The Kiwanis Club were the guest of the Rotary Club at the Rotary camp at Clear Lake yesterday, and the stag party was thoroughly enjoyed. The party motored to Kawartha Park where they were met by launches kindly
placed at their disposal by Gerald Wood, George Green and Claude Rogers, and transported to the camp. On their arrival they were greeted by the 50 Rotary boys with wild enthusiasm and an elaborate sports programme was arranged. The baseball game between the boys and the Kiwanians and Rotarians combined, in which the adults won, was a feature of the day.
Foot races, swimming events and aquatic sports came off and some splendid prizes were awarded.
The Rotarians served a buffet luncheon to their guests, and the party returned home about 9:30, happy in the justification of the work of the clubs evidenced in the smiling and sunburned aggregation of boys, who
through their boys' work have enjoyed two glorious weeks. There was no indecision in their reply when President John Crane asked them if they had had a good time. They unanimously declared they wanted to be in on the camp again next year.

Any photos or films from your Camp Kawartha days in your archive? We’d love to see them. Recently, Edward Smith kindly provided us with copies of photos from the 1920s. His father attended then and appears in a couple of the photos.

Thrive 100 Campaign Recognition
In 2020 we had to cancel, for the first time ever in our long history, Summer Camp. This was devastating, most particularly for the campers who had hoped to come, their parents, and for us. We were hit hard financially, as well as emotionally.
In response we reached out to parents, grandparents, former campers, former staff, alumni, everyone, and anyone who has been touched by Camp Kawartha and asked for their help.
The Thrive 100 Campaign was a success with donations coming in from near and far. Those donations helped us over the immediate financial challenges and got us through September 2020.
Part of the Campaign was to recognize our donors as a means of thanking them. Among our many donors were Lee and David Dobbin who told us how devastated their grandchildren were not to be able to attend Summer Camp. The grandkids are the third generation to come to Camp Kawartha – that’s quite a history!
A special plaque was created to honour all of the Dobbins and it was hung on Oak Cabin. Plaques are spread throughout the Camp to honour all donors, they were attached to canoes, dining tables, theatre benches and garden planters!

Animal Showcase: Oak Trees and Acorns
Although not ‘animals’ like our title indicates, we chose to focus on oak trees in this newsletter because I was beaned on the head with an acorn the other day! Ouch!
We are blessed with many oak trees on our property, and they are abundant along Birchview Road. There are 600 species of oak worldwide and 11 are native to Ontario. Generally, oak trees can be identified by their distinctive lobed leaves – for example, white oak usually have rounded tips while red oak generally have pointed tips. The wood of oaks is strong, hard, and dense with a very close grain and prized by woodworkers. The trees are resistant to insect and fungus infections
