September is
Healthy Aging Month!
Senior Fest 2022!
We look forward to being a part of this event every year! Thank you to everyone who stopped by our AHN table to learn how we can assist our community’s seniors with our various programs and services!
Physical activity can promote healthy aging, but chronic conditions and age-related decline in exercise capacity often prevent older adults from engaging in moderate or vigorous physical activity as recommended by health guidelines.

  • A new study shows that individuals ages 85 and older who walked for at least 1 hour a week had a lower risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease than their peers who did not engage in physical activity. Learn more, HERE.

  • Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death for senior citizens. However, you don’t have to fall prey to slips and falls. By exercising, you can improve your balance and your strength, so you can stand tall and feel more confident when walking. Click HERE, to find 14 exercises seniors can do to improve their balance.

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids are a new category of hearing aids that consumers can buy directly, without visiting a hearing health professional. These devices are intended to help adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Like prescription hearing aids, OTC hearing aids make sounds louder so that some adults with difficulty hearing are better able to listen, communicate, and participate fully in daily activities. In addition, OTC hearing aids are regulated as medical devices by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It’s taking longer to get a doctor appointment, survey finds
The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates the U.S. could see a shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034, including both primary and specialty care. Demographic trends behind the projected shortfall include a growing and aging population, an aging physician workforce, physician burnout, and a dwindling amount of new physicians entering the profession, AMN Healthcare said.
How telehealth can keep people with disabilities out of the ER
Emergency departments should be a last-stop medical option, but for people with disabilities, who visit EDs at a disproportionate rate compared with those without disabilities, this last stop becomes more commonplace.
Virtual care has inherent advantages that help to prevent excess visits to the ED for all populations, including people with disabilities.
Catching medical problems earlier on is vital to cut the flow of people into EDs. Offering individuals with disabilities quality care from their homes can help to prevent avoidable visits.
