Outdoor Buddies' New Home is Dedicated to You, Dwaine
On Saturday, September 16th we dedicated our new home at Colorado Youth Outdoors to Dwaine Robey, our beloved friend and board member and who has since passed away. About 40 attended the dedication. Above, you can see the plaque that will be mounted in the building.
The dedication was celebrated with a family fishing event hosted at the Colorado Youth Outdoors facility.
As part of the ceremony, Martha Weeks Green called in and spoke on behalf of the White Family Foundation whose grant funded the building. She thanked the board of directors for all our hard work and also announced that the Foundation has awarded Outdoor Buddies a grant this year in the amount of $70k!
For sure, this is the largest grant I am aware of since I joined Outdoor Buddies. Now it is up to all of us to work hard to show we are worthy of the support!

Meadow Springs Antelope Camp
October 7 - October 15
Meadow Springs Ranch
| |
Every year, Outdoor Buddies is fortunate to host mobility impaired, youth, and novice hunts at Meadow Springs Ranch. It is a special time when so many hunters and helpers come together for a week of antelope hunting and memories in the outdoors.
Outdoor Buddies will host our usual antelope camp at Meadow Springs Ranch starting October 7th through October 15th.
If you are signed up for a hunt with Outdoor Buddies on these dates, we are excited to see you! Please contact your hunt coordinator or if you have questions about your hunt.
Volunteers will be needed on October 6th to set up camp, and hunts will start at first light on Saturday, October 7th. Hunts will take place throughout the week, and help will be needed to break down camp on October 15th.
Contact Larry if you would like to help with these hunts.

Through the generous donation of 50 Rockies tickets, Outdoor Buddies and their families attended the Rockies /Cubs game on September 13 at Coors Field. Permian Resources, a large oil and gas company, provided not only the tickets but a private venue with food and drinks, indoor and outdoor seating and wheelchair accessible viewing areas.
We want to thank Julie Hinkle and her team from Permian and Tony Hodges from our board for handling the ticket sign up and distribution . From the messages below and pictures you can tell we all had a great time. And to top it off the Rockies came from behind and beat the Cubs 7 to 3 on a perfect day for baseball .

My wife and guide dog, Brahms left for the Lakewood light rail station on a beautiful Wednesday morning to meet up with Outdoor Buddies in Denver at Coors Field. We were lucky enough to be invited to the baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs. We were so happy to see all our friends from Outdoor Buddies and meet some new friends. My guide dog of course got a lot of attention.
We were very surprised to have a lunch buffet waiting for us in the 2nd level suites. The lunch was amazing, with burgers, hot dogs, BBQ, beans and watermelon. Brahms sure wanted a hot dog offered by the catering people, but I had to decline, so he can watch his figure.
The game was great and very exciting and the Rockies won! This was our first game in about 2 years, so it was very special. Thank you so much to Outdoor Buddies for the great day and special thank you to Permian Resources for giving us the free tickets. That was so kind of them!

"It was a perfect day for a game of baseball. Literally perfect! My closest friend, Cindy, and I were excited to watch our favorite team play. We were so sure we would be celebrating a win, we brought our big white flag with a giant blue "W" on it, ready to wave at the end of the game.
That is a big hint to all you baseball fans out there that we are Cubbies fans! We came dressed in full support of our team, and proudly displaying our Cubbies love on our t-shirts and hats. We also come with confidence that we will be celebrating a victory! Always....
So, with that information, I need to clarify my opening statement; it was a beautiful day to watch your team lose a game of baseball.
Let me give a short description of the game from a Cubbies fan perspective. In full Cubbie lingo.
The Cubs started out strong at Coors Field. We were getting men on base in unbelievable Cubs fashion. Truly, you couldn't believe your eyes on these early innings! Loading up bases and hitting some impressive, early game, home runs. Wow, did we start out strong. However, in the end the Cubs lost that momentum not long after the 3rd inning and lost the game to the Rockies by a small gap.
It must be that oxygen level at mile high? An unfair advantage for sure. Get 'em next time Cubs!
| |
Now let me put it in Rockies fans lingo.
Also, sadly, and truthfully, more accurate.
Somehow, the cubs managed to lead on the field by literally tripping their men onto base. That Cubbie luck sure didn't last long. By the 4th inning, the Rockies came out batting homerun after homerun in impressive fashion. Making many super happy Rockies fans in the bleachers, as multiple homerun balls were sent deep to fans for special keepsakes to cherish! It wasn't just the batting skill of those awesome Rockies that made some unique memories for their loyal fans. We got to see a Cubbies outfielder not just drop the ball for a possible out, he dropped the ball AND lost his glove! To describe the event, as the ball hit his glove, the glove fell off his hand and onto the field, allowing the baseball to slowly come rolling out in an almost mocking moment for the Cubs! A unique fumble (Yes, fumble is the right word here.) to add to the Cubbies humiliation for the day.
The Rockies dominated the Cubs through every remaining inning. It was a victory to behold. We Rockies fans almost....ALMOST, feel sorry for the Cubs!
Final score
Rockies 7
Cubbies 3
Now don't feel bad for us Cubs fans, because despite the crushing, slightly embarrassing loss, we had a wonderful day! A great lunch was provided and enjoyed in a wonderful private area for the Outdoor Buddies group. We were quite spoiled all day and enjoyed basking in the comfort of our amazing seats and comfortable surroundings. It felt posh for sure!
| |
Me, having only sat in the "Rock Pile" section, was sure enjoying that feeling of being spoiled at the game. To be fair, being at a live game is a rare, rare treat for me. I am so glad I got a little extra push to come out to the game. It was so much fun. Even in those, loser, blue shirts!
We send a special heartfelt thank you to our sponsor for this fun and special event.
It's hard to admit we had a blast watching our team suck at such high levels! Even though it was rough keeping that white flag, with the giant blue "W" folded and tucked away, it was still such a great day! After all, IF you have to regret wearing your Cubbies t-shirt in public, at least you can do it with a great group of people!
For me, at the end of everything that's what makes anything special....the people you share it with. I know I've written that down about Outdoor Buddies people before, but it is the truest of statements!
Again, a huge thank you to our sponsor at the game, and to Tony for that little push to get me up to Denver. (A long drive for us.) Another, even bigger thank you to everyone that was there to share the game with us. We had such a wonderful day!
HOWEVER...
Because of tradition, and strict rules of fan conduct, Cindy and I HAVE to give our team the "Chicago" treatment and be mad at the Cubbies for losing.... including, but not limited to: trash talk, angry words and displays of disgust
Every...
Single...
Time...
the score, or this game is mentioned.
At least until the Cubs win again!
Because NOTHING is more loyal than a Cubbies fan.
N O T H I N G !"

“'Take me out to the ball game.'
Many baseball fans have heard that song played at ball games around the seventh inning stretch. I truly experienced that song on September 13 during the Outdoor Buddies Rockies Cubs event it was as if the baseball Gods had given us the awesome weather and Outdoor Buddies gave us the game, it culminated in a great day at the ballpark for a sight impaired person.
The chance to bump canes against other canes and wheelchair tires is something special. It’s so wonderful to meet other people in my sphere. The company was awesome, the food was great and the Rockies won not too much you can ask for. Thank you so much Outdoor Buddies for making the baseball theme song come true and I truly mean that."

Ingredients
- 4 Ruffed Grouse Breasts, butterflied (can substitute with just about any upland game bird breast)
The Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- ½ whole milk or cream
The Breadcrumbs
- 1 cup Italian style breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup flour
- 1 tbsp. onion powder
- 1 tbsp. dried parsley (can use fresh)
- ½ tbsp. garlic powder
- kosher salt to taste
Directions
- In a frying pan add olive oil to make about a ¼” deep in the whole pan and set heat to a low setting.
- In a bowl, beat together the egg and milk until consistent.
- In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients together.
- Lay plastic wrap over the grouse meat on a cutting board and pound with meat tenderizer or rolling pin. (Do not go to crazy here; you do not want them too thin like other Italian style breaded meats).
- Test the heat of the pan by dipping finger in water and flicking a a few drops into pan and see if it sizzles. Be careful to not overheat the olive oil.
- Dip a grouse slice in egg wash then coat with breadcrumb mix. I usually use a spoon to press the mix in well on both sides.
- Add slice to pan and repeat till all the meat is in the pan.
- Each piece should cook for about 2 mins per side. Do not be afraid to pull a piece and cut open and test. Since this is grouse and we are trying to not dry it out, timing may vary depending on stoves and pan heat distribution.
- Remove pieces onto a plate with either newspaper or paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Serve over a salad or with some kind of side. Pay close attention the subtle influence of the spices and reinvent this recipe on your next try!
Notes
Italians are known to use every part of an animal. That is the way I grew up, and I am overjoyed when I see modern sustainable movements push for similar food habits. Breasting out a ruffed grouse still leaves a vast amount of meat on the bird. I suggest that you use the rest of the bird boiled down into soup, pies, or even in Italian style sauces. After that, adding the bones to compost, or even further boiling for broth are all ways to give that bird’s life the greatest purpose.
You will also have left over egg and breadcrumbs from this process. The best way to use it up is to make a small pasta dish using both. Starting with things left over in the fridge like vegetables, or meats. Add in breadcrumbs fry, add pasta, continue to fry, and add egg mix at the end. Sauce bases can be anything from oil and wine to lemon or cream. Experimentation is a great way to not only cater to your own tastes but also achieve zero waste.
