September 2024

HELLO!

Words from your Houston SCBWI Co-Regional Advisor!

Greetings, Houston SCBWI!

And just like that, summer's fun is winding down and it's back to the school grind! As fall tiptoes in, we're dreaming of cooler weather and...drumroll, please...an illustrator webinar! Yes, you heard that right! Jennie has lined up a fabulous illustrator-focused webinar with none other than Houston’s ultimate BFF, MARISSA VALDEZ! This is a fantastic opportunity to gain insights from one of the best in the industry, and we are very excited about it.

December is just around the corner, and I can’t wait to see those registrations rolling in for our 2nd annual retreat. It is going to be a great time with our creative community and an opportunity to hone your craft.

To prepare for the retreat, we will be hosting craft activities at our upcoming monthly meeting.

We look forward to your participation and to a productive and inspiring session.

We have a lot planned and are eager to share these experiences with you.

Write on!

September Meeting

An In-person and online event for all creators. What kills creativity? Routine, rules, and comparing ourselves to those who have already reached the goals we have set for ourselves. So this month we are taking a break from teaching the rules of writing and simply allowing ourselves to be silly. Your regional team will be offering up games to exercise to stretch your creative muscles. For those who join online, make sure to have some blank sheets of paper and small random items close by.

We've been dying to tell you!

Marissa Valdez is presenting an event for our illustrators! There is a small fee for this online workshop, but the opportunities for growth are in place, and the proceeds will go towards future illustrator in-person events. Check it out on the website!

FOLK WISDOM & OTHER THOUGHTS

By Jim Smolski

The smallest ray of sunshine can start a leaf to turn and look with hope. I want to be the sunshine that creates that moment for at least one leaf every day.

Change

We all saved up some money.

Now this might sound quite strange.

We felt like millionaires

With just that pocket full of change.

We all felt that way back then.

Hiking to the 5 and dime.

Grade school friends on Saturday.

It was a different time.

Money came in coins for kids.

Having any was a joy.

More than enough to buy enough.

When I was just a boy.
