The last date in California to register online or have your registration postmarked is October 19. After that you may still complete a conditional registration (also called Same Day Registration.) This can be done up to and including November third, but it must be done in person. This is the link to the list of places to register in person.
You can check on your voter status in either of these two links,
If you use the 'status' link you will need your driver’s license or ID card handy if you check this way. You can also call (415) 473-6456 here in Marin and ask them to double check on your registration. Be sure to tell your friends to check their own registration! Every vote counts.

100 years ago, the U.S. Constitution was amended to give women the right to vote. But sadly, then as now, the law didn’t apply equally to all. Due to the prevalence of Jim Crow laws, it took another 45 years — and the passage of the Voting Rights Act — for Black women to be able to cast their ballots.
Today, women of color are still unfairly disadvantaged at the polls, as certain jurisdictions work to suppress voting under the guise of preventing “voter fraud.” In the past 10 years alone 25 states have put in place new voting restrictions that largely affect marginalized communities.
We cannot let this stand. Equity is central to AAUW’s mission, but there can be no justice, equity or equality until everyone has access to the same basic civil rights.
Five suggestions for delving deeper:

Important Message from the Marin Branch Board
|
|
It's important that all AAUW members and guests are made to feel welcome and accepted. We are all dealing with a lot: the pandemic, sheltering in place, economic chaos, the national reckoning on racism, the coming election and the fact that we are now in fire season. Emotions and sensitivities can run high because of any one of these things, let alone the combined weight of them all. Particularly in small interest group settings among people who have known each other for a long time, it can be easy to forget that not everyone has the same perspective. I think this is a particularly apt message for our Behind the Headlines group since we often discuss sensitive or controversial topics. So please take note of the three items below:
AAUW is non partisan. We have values that we care about and advocate for with candidates and elected officials, but we do not support specific candidates. We actively encourage our members to vote, but we also respect the right of our members to vote for the candidates they choose.
AAUW stands against racism, has a track record of working to support women of color, and is embarking on an effort to help ensure that our organization is truly inclusive and anti-racist as we continue our mission of advocating for women and girls. Self-reflection is part of that effort as is listening with an open mind to voices that may challenge us.
AAUW Marin members are mostly all "of a certain age" and grew up in generally the same cultural milieu (other than members who grew up outside the U.S., of course). As we seek to bring in new and younger members, we need to be ready to accept them "where they are", not where we might expect or want them to be. How we think and act and even how we dress may not be how they think, act, or dress. What is important is that we support each other in efforts to advocate for the rights of women and girls.
Bottom line, awareness of and sensitivity to possible differing perspectives is more important now than ever before, as is maintaining a bit of sympathy and understanding for everyone in light of all that is going on.

Meet the Tech Trek Girls
September 19 at 11:00 AM
|
|
Our September Zoom branch meeting will feature interviews with our 2020 Tech Trek girls by Tech Trek Coordinator Amy Anderson. Although the week-long, on campus AAUW Tech Trek program in California had to be cancelled because of the Coronavirus, Amy, Angela Nuckles and Melanie Chancellor scrambled and created our own virtual Tech Trek for the girls who would have gone to Camp Curie but for the virus. Come hear about their experiences, their love of science, and the connections they made through this innovative virtual program. Miller Creek science teacher Karen Tervet will also join us to talk about the ins and outs of virtual teaching. At the outset of the program we will also feature another nonprofit working in Marin to address issues of inequality.
