Kyle Olmstead, Chief of Staff to Missouri State Senator Lauren Arthur made a presentation of the proposed legislation for the 2019 legislative session. Those issues include:  Economic Policy - Lauren hopes to be on the Budget Committee, hopes to help create a Missouri earned income tax fund to match the federal earned income tax fund, hopes to provide additional funding to higher education in Missouri and establish a more appropriate target for Missouri's foundation formula and add emphasis on early literacy. Also on the agenda is fixing prescription drug costs, fighting dark money in our elections and pushing for greater disclosure to the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Platte County Federated Women's Democratic Club
The Women's Club met at Platte County Democratic Election Headquarters on Monday September 10th.

There was no formal program or guest speaker but we discussed Parkville Days, upcoming election activities and events and the Brett Kavanaugh nomination. That disturbing nomination for the Supreme Court took up most of our time. The importance of calling the offices of the Senators who remain undecided including Claire McCaskill (who has since indicated that she will vote against confirmation) to express our opposition was discussed at length. The undecided Senators were: Jones AL 202-224-4124, Donnelly IN 202-224-4814, Heitkamp ND 202-224-2043, Murkowski AK 202-224-6665, Flake AZ 202-224-452, Collins ME 202-224-2523, McCaskill MO 202-224-6154 (now a no vote). The importance of a no vote is/was not the controversy about an alleged sexual assault when he was a teenager but rather: lying during his previous judicial confirmation hearing, his opposition to contraception as well as to abortion, his record of siding with corporate interests rather than individual citizens, and his bias toward recognizing religious objections to the civil rights of others. Merrick Garland is the answer to the so-called urgency Republicans cite as their reason to vote yes.

Sandy Van Wagner provided packets of postcards to be filled out and addressed for voter contact just before the election. More packets are available to fill out at home.
Northland Progress
On September 15 Northland Progress sponsored the Fired Up Meet the Candidates family friendly BBQ in the English Landing Park in Parkville. Candidates for Missouri State House of Representatives spoke briefly and answered questions from about priorities of the Northland Progress platform. The candidates were: District 11 - Brady o'Dell, District 12 - Sandy Van Wagner, District 13 - Mitch Weber, District 14 - Matt Sain, District 15 - Jon Carpenter, District 16 - Tom Gorenc, District 17 - Mark Ellebracht, District 17 - Wes Rogers and candidate for the Missouri Senate, District 34 - Martin T. Rucker II.

Upcoming Election News
As Election Day draws near, the urgency of this mid-term becomes ever more evident. The importance of personal contact - at fund raisers, door knocking conversation, discussions within the neighborhood, at church, at PTA, in line at the grocery store or a community meeting, telephone contact, the personally addressed letter or post card - all add fuel to the fire. Of preeminent importance in the next few days is voter registration which will close on October 10th for the November 6 election. Then it will be on to GOTV (Get Out The Vote) efforts. There has never been a more important mid-term election! This is not a year to sit on the sidelines. Each of us needs to do a little something every day.
Platte County Commission
The Platte County Commission has caused the County's credit rating to plummet to junk status over the possibility that they will default on the Zona Rosa debt. This unnecessary downgrade is the result of the current Commission's decision to consider skipping the December 1 debt payment. See https://www.kansascity.com/news/business/article218536770.html  for a more detailed discussion
Senator Claire McCaskill - Visit to Platte County
On September 15, Senator McCaskill and representatives of American Legion 318, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7356 and Patriot Outreach broke ground on the Parkville Veterans Memorial in Parkville.

Senator McCaskill spoke of the hard work and personal sacrifice given by all members of the Armed Forces in support of our county.

After the dedication ceremony McCaskill spoke to a standing room only crowd at the Platte County Democratic Election Headquarter 6732 Tower Drive, Platte Woods. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of veterans and taking care of their interests; the need to review the record of Brett Kavanaugh before deciding how to vote on his confirmation (she has since announced she would vote no) and countering the inaccurate campaign messages of her opponent.

Indivisible Visit to Congressman Graves Office
Kathy Stump the new sponsor from Indivisible organized the September 21 visit with Josh Hurlbert at the office of Sam Graves. The topics covered were: education, immigration and the impact of tariffs on Missouri farmers. Sadly, there is little response from Graves' beyond a rubber stamp of Trump policies.

Following the meeting there was a strategy session at the B. C. Bistro sponsored by Lee Karbaumer to discuss plans for Henry Martin's campaign for the 6th Congressional District. Aaron Williams, Henry Martin's campaign manager was there to discuss how we can get Henry elected. He distributed packets of fund raising letters to be hand addressed. More such packets, yard signs, post cards and information about canvassing and phone calling events will be available at the Meet Henry Martin event sponsored by Melba Nicolaisen and Lee Karbaumer at the Platte Woods Pizza Shoppe on Thursday, September 27th 6:00-9:00 p.m.
