The Electric-Plane Future is About to Take Off

(August 25, 2024 – CBS Sunday Morning)

For years, you’ve been able to watch cool-looking electric-plane videos on YouTube, created by some of the 300 companies who are working on them. But Beta Technologies, in Burlington, Vermont, is unique: “I believe we’re the only company flying people,” said Beta’s CEO and founder Kyle Clark. His company’s electric plane can carry six people, and flies 250 miles on one charge.

“Every year, batteries get better and better, about seven percent per year,” he said. “That means in seven years we’ll double that. And another seven years, we’ll double that again.”

He believes that, in the-not-distant future, we will be flying on electric-powered jetliners.

Vermont Receives $228 Million in Federal Aid for Broadband Deployment

(August 1, 2024 – Seven Days)

The Vermont Community Broadband Board was awarded more than $228 million from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to continue its high-speed internet deployment across the state.

That’s about $100 million more than the board members initially thought Vermont would receive. A December 2022 broadband accessibility map that was to serve as a basis for determining federal aid had errors, the board said at the time. An estimated 20,000 Vermont addresses that lacked access to high-speed internet were erroneously shown as having it. The board urged Vermonters to challenge the map and issued instructions on its website. Thousands answered the call, resulting in an adjustment.

“This money was hard earned by Vermonters that want to get connected,” said Rob Fish, deputy director of the board. “This is a moment that we are celebrating.”
