The IMPACT Award, established in January 2022, is given to an athlete and a volunteer who has contributed to our organization in a way that exemplifies our commitment to respect, teamwork, and unity. Their behaviors and attitudes show a dedication to making themselves, their teammates, and their communities a place where people are valued and encouraged. These individuals promote behaviors and practices that lead to a healthier lifestyle, including sports, friendship, and acceptance.

The August Athlete Award goes to Thomas Conoway.

Thomas is a well-rounded athlete who has played a variety of sports. He encourages his teammates, keeps the energy up, and gives the fans a good show! As one of his coaches comments, “Thomas’ love and enthusiasm for basketball are infectious. You can’t watch him play ball and not smile.”

The August Volunteer/Contributor Award goes to Pat & Larry King.

The Kings have made quite an impact since they got connected with Special Olympics Loudoun. They jumped in with both feet to help in basketball and then took over the Bocce program. They are fantastic at creating relationships beyond the sport and are always willing to help. Their energy and passion make us a better organization!

If you want to nominate someone for an IMPACT award, please email Amy . New winners are chosen on the 25th of every month, so nominate a deserving volunteer or athlete!!

Did you know that Special Olympics USA offers winter ice skating sports such as figure skating, ice hockey, and speed skating?

Ashburn Ice House offers adaptive ice skating classes on Sundays starting 9/8 at 1:20 p.m. This skill is essential for participating in any sport and is excellent for developing balance and strength. The sessions are $25 each, and there are seven sessions. They are all drop-in classes—all classes are not required.

Loudoun Cycling completed its second competition in Dover, DE. Cyclists exceeded Coach Amy, Cynthia, and Nasir's expectations and set new personal records in their events! Cyclists and athletes from neighboring areas and states enjoyed getting to know each other during the competition. Area 14 rides on!

SOVAL participated in the 3rd Annual KidsLoco Festival organized by Loudoun County. Our booth was well attended, and we handed out our business cards and volunteer forms. Even though most attendees knew about us, some of the diverse community weren’t aware of our activities and showed interest in participating with us. Coach Jeff and his daughter Kally, Adam, Kally Ricci, Roberto Ricci, Jessa, Coach Amy, and council member Nicole volunteered at our booth

Global Messengers become community leaders who communicate stories of hope, acceptance, dignity, and courage worldwide. They help spread our mission and vision and encourage the community to participate in the Special Olympics as an athlete, sponsor, or volunteer.

Our very own Jamie Spiering is a Global Messenger, and he would welcome the opportunity to share his story of the importance of inclusion, a core value of Special Olympics Virginia.
