Removing bias from education
Fighting for fair pay and economic equity
Advancing women in leadership

I believe we’ve become stronger and more flexible after the challenges presented by the pandemic and we plan to keep the momentum going with our programming theme for 2021-22: “The Strength of Women.” Watch for programs highlighting our strengths, helping us grow stronger, and continuing to build our network inside and outside AAUW. Be sure to save the dates noted below!
As we continue to focus on diversity and inclusion, let’s make a special effort this year to welcome guests and include new members - be sure to ask them how they would like to participate in our activities. We could really use help with this at the state level, please contact me if you would like to be part of a membership committee.
The strength and creativity of our branches is coming through in their programming and innovative fundraising activities. Watch our monthly newsletter to see what other branches have to share.
Looking forward to a great year ahead!
Karen Brown, President

Middle school girls across the state of New Jersey attended Tech Trek NJ 2021 virtually. The girls selected for Tech Trek 2020 waited through the pandemic and finally had their camp experience in July 2021. One of only 4 virtual camps in the USA this summer, Tech Trek NJ 2021 camp was a big success!
A Big Thank You
to the Tech Trek Leadership Team for their dedication, flexibility and endless hours of hard work to make camp a reality: Claudine Keenan, Ann Marchesani, Linda Harmon, and Gail Davis, all members of AAUW Atlantic County Branch. In addition, thank you to the following:
-
Many AAUW Volunteers across the branches for their time and support in interviewing the girls and helping to deliver packages of workshop materials; especially Nina DelCollo, Marian Haag, Edwina Sessons, Mariel Kolker, Rina Maslow, Judy Vernon, Karen Topham, and Karen Wertheimer.
-
Virginia Rettig for organizing Professional Women’s Night for the girls to meet and learn from women in the fields of STEM across New Jersey
-
The teachers for the core classes and other workshops provided at camp including Robotics with Malika Green, Chemistry with Ashley Brown, Bio Mimicry with Meghan Hooper-Jackson, and Forensics with AAUW Member Jackie McGuinness.
The Leadership team is looking forward to holding an in person Tech Trek Camp in Summer of 2022. If you are interested in volunteering to support the camp, contact the team at AAUWSTEMCAMP@outlook.com.

September Edition
Over half a century after pay discrimination became illegal in the United States, a persistent pay gap between men and women continues to hurt our nation’s workers and our national economy. Women working full time in the U.S. are still paid just 82 cents to every dollar earned by men — and the consequences of this gap affect women throughout their lives. The pay gap even follows women into retirement and as result of lower lifetime earnings, women also receive less in Social Security and pensions. In terms of overall retirement income, women have only 70% of what men do. Pay equity is an AAUW priority and will continue to be until the gap is fully eliminated.
This month I interviewed an Essex County AAUW member of over twenty-five years who regularly donates to the Greatest Needs Fund. She reported that while working on her Doctor of Pharmacy professional degree many years ago she applied for a part-time position in a research laboratory. After working there for some time, she realized that she was earning less money than her male counterparts. Because of that experience she has campaigned for equal pay for women and is supporting AAUW in its work to change policies and enact laws to ensure equity for all.
If you have strong feelings about helping women achieve their optimum potential, maybe you would consider donating to the Greatest Needs Fund of AAUW. It’s so easy to do! Just go to https://ww2.aauw.org/donate-gift-new/
If you would like to share the story of why you donate, please send us an email at aauwnj@gmail.com

On July 15, AAUW board chair Julia Brown announced to members that CEO Kimberly Churches will step down this fall. The board and staff are sad to see Kim go, but wish her well in her new role as president/CEO of the Washington Center. The board has a robust continuity plan in place and will meet to determine next steps shortly.
In her message to leaders, as we approach the 140-year anniversary of AAUW, Kim encourages us to imagine, "How might our members and staff address the needs of women and girls a decade from now?"

The Changing Face of Female Leadership
a New York Times Event
What is different when women lead? Hillary Clinton, Greta Thunberg and others discussed women’s role in shaping the future.
|
|
Despite unprecedented progress of women in all areas of governance and business, public life remains dominated by men who often see female leaders as threats to their power and status. Women who lead movements for change often face severe backlash.
As women take on male-dominated hierarchies, how will that change our world? What difference can female leadership make in this time of overlapping global crises? And how, exactly, do they do it?
We spoke with the climate activists Greta Thunberg, Xiye Bastida and Ayisha Siddiqa, and a special guest, the former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in an in-depth conversation with The New York Times’s Amanda Taub.

Greater Wayne branch raises scholarship funds
Greater Wayne branch held an accessory sale with at the Wayne Farmer's Market on July 17. We sold new and gently used accessories that were donated by branch members. Items included necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, scarves, pocketbooks and table top books.
We also used this event as a membership drive by handing out information about AAUW and gathering names and email addresses for a drawing for two prizes. It was a successful event with our branch earning $570 for scholarships and gaining two new members! We plan to have another accessory sale at the All Pompton Lakes Garage Sale on September 25.
Pictured above are Linda Nardone (L), a GWA member and candidate for Wayne council, and Lorraine LaShell (R), GWA President.
