SHE Recognized for Leadership in Preservation!

Self-Help Enterprises is proud to be the recipient of Community Housing Capital’s inaugural Best Preservation Strategy Award, presented at CHC’s 25th anniversary celebration in New Orleans.

This recognition highlights SHE’s successful partnership with CHC in 2024, through which we completed three preservation and rehabilitation projects that have since finished construction. These projects represented a combined investment of more than $40 million, supported by over $35 million in CHC loans, and brought new life to 160 affordable homes, ensuring long-term stability for families and farmworker communities in the San Joaquin Valley.

The projects include:

  • Casitas Del Sol, Livingston, Merced County – 36 units
  • Goshen Village, Goshen, Tulare County – 64 units
  • Villa De Guadalupe, Orosi, Tulare County – 60 units

SHE’s Assistant Director for Real Estate Development, Sheila Scheitrum, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. She noted that this recognition reflects the dedication and collaboration of the entire team and underscores the importance of preserving existing housing for vulnerable residents.

This award celebrates SHE’s ongoing commitment to preserving and improving affordable housing in the San Joaquin Valley.

A New Roof, A Renewed Peace of Mind

For more than two years, Jorge Velasquez of Tulare lived under a leaking roof. Each rainfall brought new damage, and rotten wood made the situation worse. What began as a small problem grew into a constant source of stress.

Mr. Velasquez, who has lived on disability income since 2004, simply did not have the funds to pay for the repairs himself. He began reaching out to local organizations in search of help. Most were unable to provide funding, but eventually, he was referred to Self-Help Enterprises’ Rehabilitation Program, which partners with the City of Tulare to support local homeowners.

With assistance from SHE, Mr. Velasquez was able to replace his entire roof, repair the structural damage, and reinstall his solar panels. For the first time in years, he and his daughter can live without fear of leaks or worsening conditions.

“If it weren’t for this program, I would still be frustrated with everything,” he said. “Everyone was great, very helpful. The experience was magnificent. I hope this program continues so others can be helped, too.”

Now, the Velasquez family has peace of mind knowing their home is safe, stable, and protected.

Stories like Mr. Velasquez’s are at the heart of SHE’s Rehabilitation Program. Much of the affordable housing stock in the San Joaquin Valley is decades old, and many low-income homeowners struggle to cover the costs of essential repairs. Through funding partnerships with cities and counties, SHE provides deferred-payment loans and grants for critical improvements such as roofing, plumbing, heating and cooling, windows, and accessibility modifications. By helping families preserve their homes, the program ensures safety and stability while strengthening entire communities.

SHE Spirit Week Brings Fun,

Team Energy, and Community Pride

This month, Self-Help Enterprises staff brought their creativity and team spirit to Spirit Week, leading up to the annual Corporate Games hosted by the City of Visalia. Each day had a unique theme, from Silly Sock Day and Tie Tuesday to Wacky Outfit Day, Throwback Thursday, and SHE Shirt Friday, giving staff fun ways to connect across departments.

Staff creativity and team pride were on full display, from playful socks like chicken legs, Irish four-leaf clovers, or Bob Ross prints. These moments of humor and friendly competition added to the week’s energy and fun.

The week ended with a tailgate party on campus, featuring hotdogs, snow cones, and a Directors Dunk Tank fundraiser benefiting the Resident Services Thanksgiving Meal Program. Corporate Games participants each received a free dunk ticket, and additional throws were available for purchase, with all proceeds supporting local families in need.

A special thanks to the entire SHE team who helped make Spirit Week a success, including organizers, staff volunteers, our directors, and President/CEO Tom Collishaw, who joined in the fun by braving the dunk tank. Their support made the week possible and brought laughter and excitement to all. Spirit Week reminded us that the impact of our work extends beyond projects. It is also about how we come together as a team to support one another and the people of the San Joaquin Valley.

With the Corporate Games kicking off September 25, our SHE teams are ready to compete, cheer, and carry the energy of Spirit Week forward. Go SHE!
