Building Communities

Changing Lives

September 2024

Dear Julia,

It was a privilege to have Governor Maura Healey and Education Secretary, Patrick Tutwiler, visit Community Teamwork last week to announce the codification of the Commonwealth Cares for Children (C3) funding for Early Education and Childcare, making childcare more affordable and accessible. Massachusetts is the only state in the nation to continue funding the C3 stabilization grants for providers at the same level as the federal government. We are thankful for the Governor's leadership, and our S+tate delegation as well as Congresswoman Lori Trahan for their continued support of Childcare Providers and Early Education.

Coincidently, exactly 46 years ago, I was hired to be a Day Care coordinator for Community Teamwork, with 60 children funded under the Social Services Block Grant and another 120 children in our Head Start Program. Our advocacy work to increase quality, raise salaries for staff, and provide affordable programs for parents began all those years ago and continues today as we educate and care for more than 1200 children.

Today we know the impact of high-quality programs on children’s ability to succeed in school and the impact childcare has on a family’s future. The COVID 19 pandemic laid bare the challenges and the great need for our services for children, their families, and employers. The soon to be opening Rita O'Brien-Dee Center for Behavioral Health and Development is one of our responses to the great challenge of mental health for children, staff, and families and the continued funding through C3 grants will help us provide this much needed programming.

After all these years working in this field, I am more optimistic about the future of Early Education and Care than I have ever been. We are making real progress. We know it will take all of us working together in a mixed delivery system to get to universal pre-kindergarten, adequate affordable childcare for all families, fair and equitable salaries, and a field that people aspire to work in. It is important work for the future of the Commonwealth.

For more information on the Governor's visit and our many other programs, please see below. As always, we thank you for your continued support and engagement in our mission. Together, we can continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

Gratefully,

Karen Frederick, CEO

Governor Healey Visits Child & Family Services

Some of CTI's Child & Family Services and Leadership members join Governor Healey

We are humbled that The Healey-Driscoll Administration and state legislators chose Community Teamwork to celebrate the Massachusetts fiscal year 2025 (FY25) state budget making the Commonwealth Cares for Children (C3) program permanent, continuing to be the only state in the nation to continue funding this vital program at the same level the federal government did.

"Along with increasing our ability to fairly compensate teachers and staff, C3 grants and other state supplemental funding have enabled us to meet the increasing needs of our children and families. The soon to be open, Rita O'Brien-Dee Center for Behavioral Health and Development, is one of our responses to the great challenge of mental health for our children, staff and families and continued funding through C3 grants is helping us to provide this much needed programming for our community", said Karen Frederick Community Teamwork CEO. "We are grateful to Governor Maura Healey and her Administration for taking a leadership role in ensuring this critical funding continues."

In addition to Governor Healey, in attendance were Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler, State Representative Vanna Howard, State Representative Rodney M. Elliott, City Manager Tom Golden, Mayor Dan Rourke, City Councilor Vesna Nuon, State Representative Denise Garlick - House Chair of the Joint Committee on Education, State Representative Alice Peisch - Assistant Majority Leader and Governor’s Councilor Eileen Duff.

Coordinated Family & Community Engagement

Story Time at Parlee Farms

On Tuesday August 27th, Lydia Currie and Chris Cole from our Coordinated Family and Community Engagement (CFCE) program facilitated a wonderful story time event for families at Parlee Farms in Tyngsboro.

Lydia and Chris have an amazing talent for engaging children and families, and they have truly become well known and sought after in the communities we serve. They regularly provide their services at the libraries in Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro and Wilmington but you may also see them at a farmers' market or other events in those communities.

If you would like to see them in action or refer families to fun community engagement opportunities, please visit the CFCE calendar of events on our Community Teamwork website https://www.commteam.org/program/coordinated-family-and-community-engagement/

Side note: Chris is also very talented at catching chickens that have wandered off from their home next to our Parker Ave. Early Learning site in Dracut.

YouthBuild of Greater Lowell Visits Auschwitz Exhibit in Boston

After finishing the novel "Night" by Elie Wiesel our students were given the amazing opportunity to travel to Boston to see the exhibit Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away. It was an eye opening experience for our students to be able to put their reading into a physical context.

After the exhibit students and staff were able to enjoy Boston Public Gardens, and the whole team navigated the T as a group. For many students this was their first time using Boston public transportation.

YouthBuild Lowell would like to thank the team at the Auschwitz Exhibition for the donation of passes to your exhibit.
