The Transformation Is Happening

There have been dramatic changes inside the Museum over the past several weeks. It’s filling up with exhibits including The Block (in the distance far left), The Woods (near right) and The Nest (not shown) designed by Argyle Design, in collaboration with BxCM staff and artists, and fabricated by Heartland Scenic Studio. The installation of The Waterways exhibit, designed and fabricated by Boss Display, is also complete and fully operational.

Eight artists participating in the Museum’s Arts Builds Community (ABC) Collection, curated by the Museum’s Deputy Director of Arts and Exhibits Natalie Collette Wood (who is a Bronx artist herself), have begun to install commissioned artworks. Andre Trenier, shown here, is creating a mural in The Waterways area depicting the flora and fauna that is native to the rivers in the Bronx. An immersive panoramic photograph of the Harlem River by another Bronx artist, photographer Duane Bailey-Castro, is featured above on the far wall. Children can can sit in a boat and pretend to ride down the river.

Over the next two months, our staff will be outfitting the exhibits with props, signage and final details. The Museum will host a number of focus groups to test individual exhibits and fine-tune our programming. (Be on the lookout for an announcement about a special raffle we will be holding next month that families can enter to participate in two special focus groups in November.)

Get ready everyone! We will be announcing our official opening day very soon.

New Board Members Tour the Museum

Bronx Children's Museum welcomed new Board members Sarah Flaccavento, Courtney Garcia and Paul Hughes to the facility in August. They were joined by Development Director Carolyn Schwartz, far left; Board President Arlene Lewis Bascom, third from right; Executive Director Carla Precht, second from right; and Community Liaison & Executive Assistant Takisha Dozier, far right; during their lively visit. As you can see, The Waterways is a hit!

Executive Director Announces End of Tenure

Carla Precht, Founding Executive Director, speaking at Bronx Children’s Museum's Summer Under the Stars Gala this past June with Board President Arlene Lewis Bascom.

It’s not every day that you come across passionate leaders like the Museum's Founding Executive Director Carla Precht. Later this year, Carla will be stepping down from her position. Until then, she remains committed to bringing us to the finish line as we get ready for the Museum's official opening in November.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my career to work with such a dedicated community of Staff, Board members, funders, artists, caregivers and community partners to bring our collective dream to reality,” Carla shared.

While we won’t be saying goodbye to Carla just yet, we do wish her all the best in her future projects and hope she will visit often.

The search for her successor is being conducted by the Museum Board's Search Committee and the executive search firm of Harris Rand Lusk. To see additional photos and read the entire announcement, click here.

Museum Celebrates The Alma Train at Grand Central with Skyline Chalk Drawings

Children created skyline chalk drawings with Museum guides at The Alma Train debut party at Grand Central Terminal last month. The event, which celebrated Alma’s Way and the launch of the digital game, The Alma Train, drew out hundreds of NYC-area families to enjoy craft activities, learn to dance bomba and meet Alma herself. Alma's Way was created by Museum friend and longtime supporter Sonia Manzano.

With the start of the school year approaching, the Museum was on hand at Back-to-School festivals across the borough. Museum guides assisted children as they experimented with different materials to create mixed-media collages of colorful food groups and combinations. Food is brain fuel!
