September 2020 Chamber News & Updates

Message from Executive Director Judy Kuhl
|
Where did summer go?
Here we are, at the beginning of September. Normally, kids would all be getting ready to go back to school and be excited for all the new clothes they would get! Sadly, that is not the case. In the last two months Newport has been full of visitors, and I hope our businesses were able to capture as much revenue as possible.
We are looking forward to getting back to "new normal" activities here at the Chamber of Commerce. We will be holding our Golf Tournament on October 3rd, 2020. We will be doing this in a safe way and following CDC guidelines. Grab your partners, sign up as a team and make it a fun day!
We welcomed our incoming and current Board members with our first meeting of the year via Zoom. We have a great group and I love all their ideas and suggestions. I am also getting ready to do a virtual GO West Summit where I get to have individual meetings with people from all over the world and showcase our beautiful coastal town so when safe, we can have tour groups start coming through again.
Have a great September,
Judy Kuhl
Executive Director

Message from Board President Al Fitzpatrick
|
Your newly elected Chamber Board of Directors met recently on Zoom, and I can say your Chamber Board is an enthusiastic and dedicated group working to continue to improve our Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber will host the Lincoln County Commissioner candidates with questions about their vision for our county on September 10th. There will be a link provided so our members and community will have the opportunity to learn more about the candidates.
Last month, the Chamber Ambassadors group hosted an outdoor garage sale. The Ambassadors meet by Zoom semi-monthly and learn about local businesses. The Ambassadors recently posted a video meeting with new member and NextHome Picket Fence Realtor Lila Timmons on Facebook, where they learned about local real estate in today's market conditions. Ambassador Chair Richard O' Hearn can answer any questions you may have if you are interested in joining the group.
Our Chamber staff continues to be available to members by phone or in person at the Chamber office. When you have a challenge, give them a chance to help.
Al Fitzpatrick
Chamber President

Chamber Presents Annual Awards
|
|
The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce honored several businesses and individuals as part of our annual awards for 2019-2020. Although the awards ceremony was not held in person this year, the awards were presented at the winners’ places of business.
- The Lincoln County School District was selected as the Organization of the Year, due to their incredible commitment to supporting students with meals and distance learning assistance during the pandemic.
- Business Person of the Year was awarded to Laura Anderson, owner of Local Ocean Seafoods, for her business ingenuity of creating “Dock Boxes” to turn around a difficult time for business.
- Kim Smith, AVP/Branch Manager of WaFd Bank was chosen as the Chamber Ambassador of the Year. She has volunteered at many events, served on the Chamber Board of Directors for more than two years, and recently served as the Ambassador Chair for the 2019-2020 year.
- Employee of the Year was awarded to Maggie Acosta, restaurant manager at Pacific Kitchen at Nye Beach, for her high level of customer service, natural leadership skills, and “bring it on” attitude.
- Alan Brown Tire Center was presented with the Beautification Award of the Year, for their attractive new building and landscaping at their new location on Highway 20.
- The Don Rowley Spirit of Service Award was given to Danielle and Roy Emerick. The Emericks have given many hours of selfless volunteerism to the Chamber over the years, serving as Chamber Ambassadors and being a large help at the Seafood & Wine Festival and other events.
-
Doug Orr (owner of Ocean Tire) and his family were recognized for their long-term dedication to the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival. Doug has headed the festival committee for several years, resulting in very successful and highly attended festivals. His family has also been a large part of the annual event.
- The President’s Award, presented by outgoing Board President Jason King, was given to the Chamber staff for their support of businesses during the pandemic.
- The Chamber Staff also recognized Jason, thanking him for his service on the Chamber Executive Board for several years, stepping up to serve as President this past year when the spot was vacated. His knowledge and hours of volunteer time to the Chamber have been invaluable.
- The Chamber also wishes to extend special thanks to True Cut Engraving and Manic Botanic Designs for helping create the unique succulent planter awards.
Congratulations to all the winners!

August Member Spotlight:
Surfside Community, Nye Beach
|
Ever wondered what is happening in the small, quiet manufactured retirement homes for tenants ages 55 and older? Well, plenty it seems, at Nye Beach's Surfside Community located at the corner of 3rd & Hurbert, several blocks from the beach. Surfside Mobile Village was bought by new owners a little over a year ago and they hired Jennifer Ames, one of Surfside's residents as the part time manager. Jennifer has years of experience as a property manager and a degree in Horticulture which has sparked interest amongst tenants to get more involved with the park since her arrival.
Due to the new owners' philosophy, there is now a new approach between owners and tenants. The owners officially changed the name to Surfside Community with the hopes of fostering a healthy partnership between management and tenants. So far that seems to be working as close to a dozen tenants have contributed their time: landscaping, gardening (planting & watering), laying bark chips, building flower boxes and rock pathways, painting new community signs and bird houses, donating plants, flower pots and more. Tenants are enjoying making improvements to the park's common areas that they share.
Jennifer had enjoyed and seen the benefits of being a Chamber member with her previous employer. When she became manager at Surfside Community she signed the park up as a new Chamber member with the intention of creating community within the Newport area. Due to her influence, the tenants are becoming more inclusive within the park and the Nye Beach neighborhood.
"During these challenging times we want the Newport community to know the tenants are alive and well, practicing social distancing, and wearing masks. We enjoy being a Chamber member and good neighbors to everyone."
Written by Sandy Blackman, a grateful tenant at Surfside Community

Ambassador Spotlight:
Kim Smith, Washington Federal Bank
The Chamber is pleased to spotlight Kim Smith as the Ambassador of the month. Kim has been an active Chamber member on behalf of Washington Federal Bank (WaFd Bank) for five years and became an Ambassador four years ago because she enjoys getting to know the community businesses and has been able to offer financial services, support and promotion to them. “It’s important to me to earn the trust of the local businesses and be their ‘go to’ Bank for their every business need,” stated Kim.
WaFd Bank is a national bank, but they’ve tried to act more like a reliable next door neighbor. Ever since their start back in 1917, they have been helping to build healthy, thriving communities. And, as active members of their communities, they are truly invested in their clients—delivering simple, straightforward banking solutions to help make the most of your money. From checking, savings and retirement accounts to home loan and corporate real estate financing, WaFd Bank is ready to help with your financial needs. They operate in eight western states, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas. Their common-sense, disciplined approach has stood the test of time and made them one of the strongest financial institutions in America.
Kim has volunteered with the Ambassadors at the Newport Marathon, Seafood & Wine Festival, and Cider Festival. She has served as the Ambassadors Secretary and most recently as the Chair of the Ambassadors during the 2019/2020 year. All this while also serving on the Chamber Board of Directors for more than two years, and currently as the Secretary on the Board’s Executive Committee. Washington Federal has also shown their support as an active supporter of the Chamber through various event sponsorships. Kim volunteers and assists at many events as needed to promote the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce.
Most recently Kim was awarded the Ambassador of the Year Award for 2019/2020. This recognition is a celebration of a special Ambassador who has willingly and spiritedly served the Ambassadors and the Chamber. Many thanks to Kim for her service, she is truly valued by the Chamber and community!
