September 2021 Newsletter
From Our President...
Dear Maryland/DC ACDA Members,

I hope your fall is going well! The MD/DC ACDA chapter has been busy organizing fall workshops for ACDA members to meet the needs of our current time and we would love to see you there!

We have two upcoming Zoom workshops: DIY Recording Tech on 9/28 and Teaching Embodied Singers on 10/23. Registration links are below (be sure to have your ACDA member ID for registration!) We are also partnering with MCEA to hold an in person Fall Reading Session on Sat. 10/9 and we have already started collecting donations for Honor Choir scholarships for students in need. We are so grateful for your donations to establish this important fund and help students participate in the Eastern Division Honor Choir in 2022!

The Board established a Diversity Initiatives Committee over the summer and we are excited to share updates from the committee below.

Best wishes to each of you this fall and we hope to see you soon!

ACDA MD/DC Chapter Diversity Initiatives Committee Update
Margaret Clark
Paul Heins
The ACDA MD/DC Chapter has inaugurated a Diversity Initiatives Committee and adopted the following as a guiding mission:

The mission of the Diversity Initiatives Committee of the Maryland/DC Chapter of ACDA is to foster diversity and inclusivity in our membership, ensembles, and repertoire, through active engagement with underrepresented choral musicians and potential choral participants. As a result of this inclusivity, the committee plans to bring about a broader definition of choral excellence to maintain relevance through the expansion of both the reach and impact of our profession and its musical scope.
The new committee is co-chaired by Margaret Clark (artistic director of the Children's Chorus of Washington) and Paul Heins (associate conductor of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington and director of the GenOUT Youth Chorus).

One of the goals of the Diversity Initiatives Committee is ongoing investigation and research into, understanding of, and problem-solving related to underrepresentation in our ACDA Chapter membership. This effort is underway as we dig into data collected in our recent member survey.

We are also looking for ways to increase membership in our ACDA Chapter among underrepresented populations of choral directors, notably DC-based directors, directors of HS and adult choral programs, directors from private and independent schools, and directors of community choruses large and small.

The Committee also plans to host education opportunities for our membership, related to the topic of diversity. Topics might include cultural appropriation, examination of song texts, and resources/strategies for creating and sustaining welcoming spaces for underrepresented singers.

If you are interested in being a part of this committee's work, please contact Margaret and Paul.

Announcing the MD/DC ACDA Honor Choir Scholarship Fund:
Support local singers today!
The mission of the Diversity Initiatives Committee of the Maryland/DC chapter of ACDA is to foster diversity and inclusivity in our membership, ensembles, and repertoire through active engagement with underrepresented choral musicians and potential choral participants. One way the mission of the Diversity Initiatives Committee will be enacted is through the support of underrepresented singers participating in ACDA conference Honor Choirs.

The MD/DC ACDA has created a Honor Choir Scholarship Fund to assist with the costs involved in participation in ACDA Honor Choirs. The Honor Choir Scholarships will be given by lottery to any singer with financial need who has been accepted into ACDA Honor Choirs and applied for assistance. The first recipients will attend the 2022 ACDA Eastern Region Conference in Boston, MA. Application information will be coming soon!

Help support local singers by contributing to the MD/DC ACDA Honor Choir Scholarship Fund NOW! Donations are graciously accepted at all times via PayPal* at paypal.me/chc2019. Additionally, donations will be accepted at the Joint ACDA/MCEA Fall Reading Session on October 9, 2021. Come share, sing, and raise money for scholarships!

*If you would prefer to make your donation via check, please contact Megan Fitzharris, the Honor Choir Scholarship coordinator.
