Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery from substance use and mental health, just as we celebrate improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease.

Each September, Recovery Month works to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible.

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide is a topic that hides in the shadows. All too often it goes unaddressed, even when we may sense someone is struggling.

You can make a difference by learning the warning signs, knowing the risk factors, and bravely having a REAL open and honest conversation with someone you care about.

FREE QPR Trainings

The Hub: Behavioral Health Action Organization for Southwestern CT offers free QPR trainings every month. The goal of the QPR training is to help community members prevent suicide. As a result of this training, participants will be able to recognize risk factors and warning signs and understand the myths and facts associated with suicide. Have some

knowledge of referral sources and skills to use to help someone get support.

Teen Drinking Much More Likely If Parents Binge Drink, Study Finds

FRIDAY, Sept. 15, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Parents who drink too much, too often, may be influencing their teens to do the same, a new study finds.

"Adolescents whose parents binge drink had a four times greater chance of drinking alcohol themselves compared to adolescents whose parents did not binge drink, and so this study provides more evidence that binge drinking is not only harmful to the person drinking alcohol but also to others around them," said senior study author Marissa Esser, the lead of the alcohol program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Young People’s Mental Health Changes, Risk, and Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Question:  Did secondary school students’ mental health difficulties and mental well-being change during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what factors are associated with risk and resilience?

Findings:  In this cohort study of 7250 UK students not exposed (12 schools; n = 864 students) and exposed (72 schools; n = 6386 students) to the pandemic during assessment, greater risk for depression; social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties; and deteriorations in mental well-being were associated with the pandemic. Risk and resilience were associated with individual, home, friendship, and school characteristics.

Meaning: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with worsened outcomes in mental health for secondary school students, and their risk and resilience needs to be conceptualized at individual and social levels.
