Your Community, Your Parks

Whether you live in the Outer Banks or consider it your home away from home, this is your community and these are your national parks. There is no time that this is more evident than now as we recover from Hurricane Dorian. Our friends and family in Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands have a long road ahead of them, but you all have shown your love for this community through an outpouring of support. I can't say thank you enough to each of you who has reached out to see how your parks' staff and resources are doing. Back to School: Education Beyond Park Boundaries

Your OBX national parks aim to inspire and educate our next generation – whether they are in the parks or in the classroom. Now that school is back in session, there are a variety of resources available to teachers and parents who want to carry summer vacation experiences into learning opportunities in the classroom or at home.  Students of all ages can learn math, science, history and the arts using themes (and memes!) from your OBX national parks.  Check out these   18 ready to go lessons plans  -  ranging from ‘Can You Outrun the Wright Flyer?’ to ‘Wright Memorial Memes’ - available for download from Wright Brothers National Memorial.   Also, if you’ve got a 4th grader in your family, be sure to visit the   Every Kid Outdoors   website to get your family’s free year pass to any national park in the country!

Meet Your Ranger: Jonathan Polk

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a park ranger, the best way to find out is - ask a park ranger! Jonathan Polk would tell you, "I love every part of being a ranger, especially the people I get to meet and interact with every day." Jonathan started his career on the other side of our state as a ranger in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As a lifelong visitor to the Outer Banks, he's now living his dream of working as the Lead District Ranger at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. From climbing the lighthouse to helping a young girl catch her first fish, Jonathan shares with us this month why he is so passionate about protecting our national parks for future generations.
