Skiers prepare to tackle the slopes at the 2015 VOS conference in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Greetings!

It is officially time to start planning for the 2016 VOS conference in Big Sky, Montana. Registration is NOW OPEN on the VOS Store website where you can register for the conference and book tickets for the banquet, Foundation night and the on-mountain picnic. Register before December 15, and you will get an early-bird discount on your registration. Take advantage of Penny Smith's hard work and make your travel plans through ski.com ( http://eventtrax.ski.com/vosbsky) as you will get special rates on lodging, lift tickets, air and ground transportation.

Abstract submission for the 2016 conference is now open, and the November 1st deadline is just around the corner. Please remind your residents to participate in the Mark Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Awards as it may be their only chance to do a podium presentation whilst wearing flip flops.

There are still a few spots open in the exhibit hall if you are interested in showing off your wares at the 2016 conference. Please see below for more information or contact Janet Van Dyke at [email protected].

Dr. Katja LinOur sponsor spotlights this issue are Securos and Medtronic. Both these companies have had such a positive impact in our profession, and we are extremely grateful for their continued support of our organization.

Lastly, we would like to give a shout out to our VOS members who are presenting at ACVS in Nashville, Tennessee this year. For many of us, conferences are our main source of new research and ideas, and we appreciate the dedication of all of our speakers!

VOS UPDATES ADVERTISING PROGRAM

VOS has streamlined its advertising program for its 2015 email newsletters.

Advertisers may choose to place an ad for one billing cycle, which covers three newsletter issues, or select a discounted annual package, which covers nine newsletter issues.

VOS is now offering vertical banner ad space in addition to horizontal banner ad space. Horizontal and vertical banner ads are available in two sizes (single-height or double-height), and each ad may be linked to the advertiser's website homepage or other web page.

A maximum of 15 horizontal and 2 vertical advertising spaces are available in each issue, and priority is given to annual advertisers.

To receive more details about the advertising program, please contact Janet Van Dyke

VOS ESTABLISHES GUIDELINES FOR SOTI TALKS
The Veterinary Orthopedic Society's State of the Industry talks provide an opportunity for our valued sponsors to share with the membership interesting scientific research, clinical data or information about new treatments, developments, and/or techniques. These should be presentations with scientific merit rather than commercials.

Presentations will be 10 minutes long plus 5 minutes for questions. The time limit will be adhered to strictly. PowerPoint files (or PDFs of these files) must be submitted to the Sponsor Chair ([email protected]) 14 days in advance for review by the Chair and the Session Moderator. This ensures suitability and enables time for any necessary revisions. Late submissions may result in loss of the preferred time slot for presentation.
SEND US YOUR NEWS!

VOS members: We'd like to receive your news about recent publications, job opportunities, speaking engagements, etc. for publication in our email newsletter and website.

Please send your news items with photos if possible to [email protected].

abstractsVOS ABSTRACT SUBMISSION CLOSES NOVEMBER 1
Call for Abstracts VOS invites practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large and small animal species to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance.

Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts; as will submissions for the Complications and Corrections session.

Residents Eligible for Bloomberg Research Awards
VOS also presents up to seven Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Awards each year to residents submitting abstracts for presentation at the VOS Annual Conference. The awards allow the recipients to travel to the meeting to present their work.

Qualified resident abstracts are chosen based on predetermined criteria by a panel of judges. The award(s) are given to help offset the cost of attending the conference to present their research. Awards are provided by the generous funding of the sponsors and are limited.

In 2015, the Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Awards were sponsored by AO Vet North America, IMEX, Merial, New Generation Devices, Orthomed, Securos and the VOS Past Presidents. Each year, up to seven resident abstracts are chosen for this award.

Visit our Abstract Submission page to submit your abstract or learn more. Abstract submission closes on November 1.

securos SPOTLIGHT ON ...
SECUROS -  A DIVISION OF MWI

Securos logo Location: Fiskdale, Massachusetts

What year was the company started?
SECUROS was started in 1997.

What products / services does your company offer?
SECUROS synergizes innovation, customer service, dedication, quality and integrity into the driving ambition for everything we do. We offer a broad portfolio in joint management, trauma, power equipment, biomaterials, surgical instruments, repair services, suture and continuing education.

What should Veterinary Orthopedic Society members know about your company?
As SECUROS grows, our perspective on product development matures. Each new catalog presents the best in class from carefully conducted clinical research, responsible testing, and a corporate mandate that superior quality is the only acceptable standard. Blending specific biomedical and bioengineering strengths with experience and ingenuity drives our team to product success. Product designs center on efficiency and affordability so that veterinary surgeons, and ultimately their clients, benefit from the cost-effective implementation of best medicine. We believe our direct interaction with veterinary surgeons and the observation of countless procedures inspire our R & D team's progress from drawing board to surgical table.

Can you explain an issue in the veterinary market and the solution that your company was able to solve?
Veterinary surgeons did not have a lifeline of dedicated power equipment servicing the veterinary market and were, therefore, required to purchase from human companies; many of which are leaving the veterinary market altogether. Effective August 1st, 2014, MicroAire® Surgical Instruments entered into an exclusive US distribution agreement with SECUROS. As part of this distribution agreement SECUROS has become their partner for MicroAire® surgical orthopedic power equipment and associated disposables,e.g., blades, burs, etc. Disposables are not exclusive to the MicroAire® brand products, but also accommodate most leading brands.

What year was the company started? 1949

What products / services does your company offer?
Medtronic, formerly Covidien, provides products and services that spans the veterinary continuum of care. Every day, our customers look to us for a wide variety of essentials from Monoject™ Needles and Syringes, Kendall™ wound care and suture products-to innovative surgical products like the ForceTriad™ energy platform, MIS instruments and Nellcor™ pulse oximetry. Medtronic offers in-depth product training and servicing with highly trained sales representatives and also supports numerous veterinary societies and labs.

What should Veterinary Orthopedic Society members know about your company?
It is an exciting time for Covidien Animal Health as we are now joining Medtronic. We are creating the world's premier medical device company focused around a singular mission; to alleviate pain, restore health and extend life. Medtronic (formerly Covidien) has been a proud sponsor of VOS for many years. We have a new name but our commitment to the animal health community remains unwavering.

Can you explain a challenging situation that your company was able to solve?
Hemostasis is critical to all surgeries. By bringing vessel sealing technology to animal health, with our ForceTriad™ energy platform, we enable surgeons to focus on the procedure instead of blood loss.

Can you tell us about any new products or services your company is developing?
Medtronic is the world leader in bone graft materials and spinal fixation. Look for these and other new technologies from the new Medtronic Animal Health .
