Community Education News
Busy September
The month of September is always a busy time for Bloomington Community Education. All of our programs kick it into high gear with the return of students for the start of school. There are new littles entering the classrooms at Pond and Southwood Center and new adults learning English or taking GED Preparation classes at the Community Education Campus. A new season of Youth and Adult Enrichment classes are filling classrooms, gyms, and outdoor recreation spaces at all Bloomington sites. Just page through our Fall catalog to get a sense of what is happening in Community Education. Didn't receive a catalog? Give us a call at 952-681-6108 and we'll send you one!
Everyone Loves A Parade!
Early Learning Services at the Heritage Days Parade
The Early Learning Services Team had a blast creating their Pete the Cat float for the Heritage Days Parade. The team loved connecting with so many Bloomington kids and families along the parade route. A big shout out to Teacher Jeff for providing the Jeep, trailer, and music for the parade. The ELS team was joined by their partner Think Small, who provided bookmarks and tattoos to encourage families to join their Think Small ParentPowered texting program.

Outstanding Volunteer Remembered
Ted Nemzek was the kind of volunteer we all hope to work with. When asked if he made the recipes at home that he helped make in the cooking classes for Learning Exchange, he replied, "Oh, no. I don't know how to cook."
"Then why do you volunteer in the cooking classes?"
"Because you need me."

Ted passed away at the age of 89 on September 5, 2018. His was a life of service and inspiration. Ted loved working with adults with disabilities at Learning Exchange. His gentle humor and conversation drew out the best in people as he helped with classes. Student's faces would brighten when they entered a classroom and saw him, exclaiming, "Ted's here!"

Ted started volunteering in 1994, and Learning Exchange staff nominated him for a KARE 11 "Eleven Who Care" honor, which he received in 2006. Ted logged approximately 860 volunteer hours. He inspired other members of his family to volunteer as well. Due to declining health, he had slowed down over the last five years, but as recently as last December, his granddaughter Ashley brought him to the Cocoa and Carols class where he was immersed in conversation with our learners.

Thank you Ted for your inspiration and passion.
