Ted Nemzek was the kind of volunteer we all hope to work with. When asked if he made the recipes at home that he helped make in the cooking classes for Learning Exchange, he replied, "Oh, no. I don't know how to cook."
"Then why do you volunteer in the cooking classes?"
"Because you need me."
Ted passed away at the age of 89 on September 5, 2018. His was a life of service and inspiration. Ted loved working with adults with disabilities at Learning Exchange. His gentle humor and conversation drew out the best in people as he helped with classes. Student's faces would brighten when they entered a classroom and saw him, exclaiming, "Ted's here!"
Ted started volunteering in 1994, and Learning Exchange staff nominated him for a KARE 11 "Eleven Who Care" honor, which he received in 2006. Ted logged approximately 860 volunteer hours. He inspired other members of his family to volunteer as well. Due to declining health, he had slowed down over the last five years, but as recently as last December, his granddaughter Ashley brought him to the Cocoa and Carols class where he was immersed in conversation with our learners.
Thank you Ted for your inspiration and passion.
