Maryland Freedom Seekers on the Underground Railroad

October 15 @ 2 - 3:30 PM

Location: Historical Society of Baltimore County | 9811 Van Buren Ln, Cockeysville, MD 21230

Maryland was the starting point of many unsung heroes of the Underground Railroad. Freedom seekers embarked on the perilous journey from slavery to freedom in whatever way they could. They used ruses and found allies to elude slave catchers but lived in constant fear until they obtained their freedom papers. In their adventures, these freedom seekers used initiative, determination and courage. These qualities served them well as they achieved freedom. Jenny Masur tells their stories.

GPS Historic Fall Hike

October 22 @ 1 PM

Location: Granite Presbyterian Church | 10637 Old Court Rd, Woodstock, MD 21163

The Granite Historical Society is planning a Fall Hike on Sunday, October 22nd. We will meet in the parking lot of the Granite Presbyterian Church at 1PM. We’ve applied for permission with DNR to park cars inside the access gate at Alberton Rd and then we’ll walk along the Alberton Road Trail to the Daniels Dam, a distance of about a mile and a half. This is the last remaining dam on the Main Falls of the Patapsco. Along the way we’ll visit the Upton house, a really neat historic stone and frame house built by Joshua Upton in 1851. We’ll also visit the ruins and graveyard of St Stanislaus Church, a mission church established by the Woodstock College Jesuits in the 1870s. Unfortunately, the church was struck by lightning and burned in 1926 and never replaced.

As always, if your are interested please RSVP by email to info@granitehisotircalsociety.org

BCHN Success Stories

Marshy Point Nature Center Council thanks you for your support! We had a fantastic Artifact Cleaning Day at Marshy Point Nature Center this past September. Everyone was able to get their hands dirty...and then clean again by going through historic items to prepare them for future evaluation. Our cleaning days are less strenuous than our digging days so it is always the perfect opportunity for those with physical restrictions. We always welcome spectators as well. Most items were from the mid 18th century through the mid 19th century. A few scouts were also involved, working on the archaeology merit badge. In addition, we had our annual Fall Festival later in the month with a table set up to view our "Big Book of History." Although it rained, we had a great turn out and gained more interest for future events. If you would like to join in the fun, please follow us on Facebook to keep up to date on future digging, cleaning, and documenting of the artifacts found. Many items can be viewed in the glass display case inside of the nature center. Please reach out through Marshy Point Nature Center's website or Facebook to become involved.

Who is BCHN?

The Baltimore County Heritage Network was formed in 2022, supported by a grant from the Maryland Center for History and Culture’s Miller History Fund. This collaboration of small history organizations around Baltimore County allows us to share our combined strengths. We hope to increase the sustainability and public awareness of our member organizations. More than that we hope to spread our love of our local history and its amazing stories to more people in our region.

Badges, patches, and collar devices aren't just decorative pieces added to uniforms, They are important symbols that help to distinguish a firefighter's rank, their particular job(s) within the department, and often which department they belong to. Firefighters first started wearing badges all the way back to the early volunteer days when they were using hand pump engines. While not all firefighting badges feature a Maltese cross, it is a very popular firefighting symbol that has its origins going all the way back to the crusades.
