Highlighting New Members
Lana Lyons lives in the Hollywood district with her cat, Kiroro, in a lovely apartment with a patio where she gardens.

She was previously director of art galleries on the East Coast and remains amazingly creative and resourceful. Singing, playing the guitar, doing yoga, and meditation are some of her interests and daily activities. She is a writer and loves reading.

Lana is interested in volunteering with NE Village. She also wants to play the ukulele and is looking for an instrument!
Susan Hodge moved from Seattle to Portland to be with her daughter and son-in-law and two grandchildren. She lives in a lovely apartment alongside her family’s home, caring for her grands regularly when not traveling.

Susan has been engaged with NE Village as a volunteer and driver for several years. She has often reached out to assist and befriend Villagers who have not been able to socialize as much as they would enjoy. Susan has volunteered to assist the membership team and is a candidate for Governing Council.
Nancy Johnson moved to Portland with her husband, Dave, in 2019. They had been regular tourists here and fell in love with the city. Nancy and Dave are already true Portlanders; they enjoy trying new and interesting foods, viewing Portland’s architecture and neighborhoods, and discovering the beauty and charm of the natural environment.

Nancy is excited to join the Village and has volunteered to work with the membership team.
Barbara Nelson has lived in Portland for many years, moving here from California. Barbara was a teacher of children with special needs and has two adopted children. Barbara likes pot gardening, especially flowers. She does fine work with her hands and loves to design with beads. She creates amazing pieces of art.
Yard Party Service Signups for Members this Fall

Do you need some help with raking leaves or putting the flower garden to bed, or the other garden tasks that make it easier to manage your yard for the year?

One of our seasonal NE Village services is a multi-volunteer “yard party” so much more gets planned and done in a two-hour service. You’ll sign up for a Saturday slot during October or November, on a first-come-first-served basis.

To schedule one of these times, members should phone the NEV office at 503-895-2750 as soon as possible.

Because we’ve been offered service teams of Central Catholic High School students (with their school staffer) to assist one of our volunteers this year, there are more slots to be scheduled, even multiple homes at a time! If your yard job is smaller than others, smaller yard parties of only Village volunteers are also available.
Community Outreach at the Fremont Fest

See the photo at the top of this newsletter of our office manager, Connor Magee and member Sue Danielson in the Beaumont neighborhood at Fremont Fest on August 21.

We had a successful experience with numerous folks taking our brochure, engaging with us to talk about the Village, and also completing member and volunteer interest forms. We are grateful for our volunteers’ time spent spreading the word to more potential members and volunteers.
Book Group 2 Review

NEVillagePDX is fortunate in having so many people who enjoy reading, thinking about, and discussing books that there are two book clubs.

I’ve found that joining Book Group 2 has introduced me to books I might never have otherwise found. Willingness to read something I might not have chosen has expanded my horizons. The other participants are articulate, intelligent, and delightfully opinionated readers whose reflections on our selections always give me something to think about.

Since the group selects the books we read, there’s always someone to explain the current choice, and I often find learning more about the other participants as interesting as the book discussion.

--Marina Bear

Note: We meet on Zoom on 4th Wednesdays of the month. (Nov, & Dec, are merged into one early Dec meeting.) While Book Group 1 is full and closed, new attendees are welcome to join Book Group 2; find us and register in our website calendar nevillagepdx.org/calendar
September Quarterly Meeting;
Elections & Conversations
Members and volunteers, please attend our next virtual quarterly meeting. Every September this serves as the annual meeting of our entire community, and our membership elects new Governing Council members.

Saturday, September 11, 4:00-5:30 pm

You need a computer, tablet, or smartphone ready with Zoom; if you need help with this process, our office staff is glad to walk you through it, phone at 503-895-2750. Log in and register on September’s online Northeast Village Calendar to attend.

In the first part of the meeting we will elect new GovCo members. Only members can vote at the meeting on the slate of candidates for our Governing Council, shown below. Nominations from the floor will also be accepted at the meeting.

In the second part of the meeting everyone will break into smaller groups to have conversations about two related topics:

Aging at Home: Explore what “home” really is and means and how it differs from a retirement facility.

Community & Connections: What are our expectations for “community"? What are the factors of a strong community?

We will provide more detail to you, as well as some key questions to pose to your groups -- so you will have a chance to think about the topics prior to the meeting.
Candidates for Election
New Candidates
Jon Dickman

Jon has been a volunteer for the Village for over a year, for which he is scheduled to facilitate an ongoing memoir group called “It’s All About Us.”

Jon volunteers as one of the regular hosts for the Portland Folk Music Society’s weekly virtual (Zoom) song circles. Recently he was a para-educator and educational assistant for Portland Public Schools. He has served on the boards of Playland Day Nursery and Kol Shalom Community for Humanistic Judaism, where he also served as Ritual Director and Children’s Education Director.

Susan Hodge

Susan became a Village volunteer in 2018. As well as being a driver, she wrote for the newsletter under Pat Vivian’s supervision and currently participates in the partnership program and the membership committee.

She is also the proud member of a circle group that has met regularly throughout the pandemic. Susan believes in caring for each other in ways that foster independence and nurture friendships.

Suzanne Silverstein

Suzanne has been enthusiastic about the aging-in-place concept for a long time and has been involved in the development of Northeast Village since its inception.

She has been involved in the membership committee for several years and in programming for a time. It has been a pleasure to see how the Village has enlarged its mission from primarily providing services to building a true community of members and volunteers.

Candidate Continuing for a New Term:
 Stephanie Sameh

In addition to serving on GovCo, Stephanie currently co-chairs the movie group with another member, Dorothy Cox.

Stephanie is interested in social justice issues and spent two years working on the Mexican-American border, which she describes as a humbling and satisfying experience. She is an avid reader and has belonged to a book club for years. Stephanie volunteers at the St. Andrew food pantry and is able to use her Spanish language skills there.

Establishing Support Groups

A few years ago, NE Villagers who are caregivers for a spouse came together to form a support group. They meet each month to share their concerns, gather encouragement, and learn new strategies and resources for support. The group has suggested we make the support available to others in the Village.

Possible support groups may be:
     a new group for caregivers
     issues of aging
     mobility
     widows/widowers
reestablishing the previous support group for low vision

If you are interested in joining a group, please notify the office by e-mail at programs@nevillagepdx.org or by phoning the office at 503-895-2750, so we can gather names and interests. Efforts to form groups will occur during the fall months this year.
Members, Help Update Our Vendor List

One of the services offered to NEV members is a list of vendors who have been recommended by our Village members. This list covers a wide variety of services that are not offered as part of Village services. So this is a place to start when you need additional help with a project or other needs.

Our list now contains about 130 vendors, but some of these listings are several years old and need to be reviewed, updated, or replaced with new listings. So, especially over the past “pandemic period," what vendors have you used, particularly liked, and would recommend to other Village members?

To see the list, go to our website nevillagepdx.org, select “VENDORS” and then ”VENDOR RECOMMENDATIONS”. Once you are logged in, you’ll see a short selection from the table of vendors and a button “View Vendor Recommendations”; select this to display the full vendor table in another browser window or tab.

To add to the list, go back to the previous Recommendations page, farther down, to find the button “Make a Vendor Recommendation." Select it to fill out a simple form to submit a recommendation of your own. You’ll need the name of the vendor, their contact information (contact name, phone, e-mail, website, and/or address), and a short description of the services you used and your experience, so have that information handy when you select the form.

You can be a big help to your fellow Villagers by sharing your experiences with local vendors.
