Changing Demographics
What you need to know about the 2020 Census
|
|
According to the United States Census, over the last 10 years, the U.S population has become more racially and ethnically diverse.
Here are a few key takeaways from the U.S Census data :
- The white population declined for the first time on record from 63.7% in 2010 to 57.8% in 2020
-
"The Hispanic or Latino population was the second-largest racial or ethnic group, comprising 18.7% of the total population" (Note: Hispanics can be of any race)
- " The Black or African American alone, non-Hispanic population, was the third-largest group at 12.1%.
The data confirms what many have been saying for years the future of the country is Hispanic/LatinX.
It is important to note that some demographers think the white population is not shrinking as much as shifting to multiracial identities. "The number of people who identified as belonging to two or more races* more than tripled from 9 million people in 2010 to 33.8 million in 2020. They now account for 10% of the U.S. population" the U.S Census noted.
