September is a month known for Labor Day, but it has another beautiful day to celebrate; Grandparents Day. A grandparent's role in a child's life is important and different from a parent's role. A grandparent can "spoil" the grandkids rotten, be a supportive person, and give them lots of love. They may be on the sideline cheering during a game, reading the same story repeatedly, sharing memories about the time they were young, or maybe taking the grandkids to garage sales. It takes a village to raise a child; for most, that will include a grandma or grandpa, even if they are unrelated.
Celebrating Grandparents Day on September 11th can be easy as pie! The key is to choose activities that the grandparent will enjoy and allow the family to connect. Sharing a simple meal and having time to visit will be treasured by most grandparents. You can also play a board game, or card game, or do a puzzle together. Grandparents Day is a great time to share family stories or look at old pictures. If you can't meet in person, give them a call or do a video chat that will let them know you care.
Tips for Grandparents!
Here are some fun activities to do with the grandkids:
1. Draw a family tree- Children of all ages love to hear and talk about their family. So draw as many branches of your family tree as possible and share fun stories about different family members. This is a great way to connect your grandkids to the family and celebrate the past.
2. Make a Fort- A classic game that is easy and fun for all. Whether you use a table, chairs, or couch cushions, add a few blankets and create a "secret place" to hide and play.
3. Go on a Walk- Take your grandkids out and enjoy a light stroll through the neighborhood or at the park. If you have little ones, play "I Spy" or talk about what you see! These can be colors, shapes, and things out and about. Make it a fun adventure that the kids will remember!
It doesn't matter what you choose to do as long as you are together!
