Going to religious services may lower the risk for premature death, a new study suggests.

Researchers used data from a long-term study of 75,534 women participating in Nurses' Health Study. Over 16 years through 2012, their health and lifestyles were tracked, including their attendance at religious services. The report is in JAMA Internal Medicine.

After controlling for more than two dozen factors, the researchers found that compared with those who had never gone to services, attendance more than once a week was associated with a 33 percent lower risk for death from any cause, once a week with a 26 percent lower risk, and less than once a week with a 13 percent lower risk. Risks for mortality from cardiovascular disease and cancer followed a similar pattern.

Most of the women in the study were Protestant or Catholic. It is unclear whether a similar association would be found between attending religious services and longevity for people of other religions of faiths. (But why not?)

The researchers statistically eliminated the possibility of reverse causation - that is, that healthy people went to services more often than unhealthy ones.

And they found that some variables, such as social support and a tendency not to smoke, contributed to the effect. But no matter how then analyzed the data, the effect of attendance alone seemed to have benefits.

"This suggest that there is something powerful about the communal religious experience," said the senior author, Tyler J Vander Weele, a professor of epidemiology at Harvard. "These are systems of thought and practice shaped over millennia, and they are powerful."

Gary, age 55, son of Bea Tamminen, who lives alone in Marquette, MI has throat cancer. He's had a pretty rough go with radiation recovery.  After things were looking good he ran into three weeks of severe pain, swollen tongue, etc. which has now abated after some changes in medications.  Since his cancer was very deep and severe the radiation is still doing its work.  Until it's done we do not know if the treatment got everything.  His attitude is good.  Prayers are still needed!

GREAT TRUTHS THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED:

No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats.

When your Mom is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair.

Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.

You can't trust dogs to watch your food.

Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.

Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time.

You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.

Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts.

The best place to be when you're sad is Grandma's lap.
