Dear Friends of Reading is Fundamental of Northern Virginia,

The Olympics and Paralympics — a wonder to watch as athletes from around the world compete every four years to be the best of the best! In honor of the Paris Games, RIF of NOVA is holding its own celebration — BOOK OLYMPICS — a fund- and fun-raising campaign to bring books into the lives of Northern Virginia children.

Book Olympics book distributions have taken place at several NOVA RIF schools!

First, the fund-raising part:

Your donations to RIF of NOVA purchase new books for over 20,000 children in Title 1 schools and children's centers in the City of Alexandria, and in Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties.

Since we are an all-volunteer organization totally dependent on YOU for support, all donations are used for this effort.

We ask you to give what you can to ensure that kids who need them have books-to-keep in their homes. According to the U.S. Department of Education:

“The only behavior measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home.”

Every $4.00 = one book, so please give generously so the children in our community are able to choose at least one new book each year. Your fully tax deductible donations go directly to this effort and make all the difference! Books change lives!

Now the fun-raising part:

Book Olympics features an interactive contest that involves YOU!

Tell us about an element of sports in your life while making your NOVA RIF donation! Almost anything goes! Among many possibilities, it could be…

• a story about your own or your children’s, grandchildren’s, friend’s (etc.) participation in a sport
• a story about a current, historical, or book character athlete whose skill or leadership inspired you
• a story about the impact of sports on your family or community as you engaged in athletic fun or watched it in person or on TV

Your sports stories (and an associated photo if you have one, please!) will be featured in our RIF RAP newsletter, on our website, and in our social media as we celebrate Book Olympics. Five stories selected by the RIF of NOVA board will win a book store gift card. Note: You don't have to donate to RIF of NOVA to submit your story. Conversely, you don't have submit a story to donate! But we hope you will do both!
