Adat Shalom's School Year Begins on Shabbat!

Welcome Everyone!ברוכים הבאים לכולם b'ruchim habaim l'kulam!  Please join us in welcoming back-to-shul our youngest learners - תלמידים talmidim - for a new year along their Jewish journeys.  And please give a warm thanks - תודה רבה todah rabah - to our teachers - מורים morim - and our teen leaders - מדריכים madrichim - who are helping to guide our students on this path.  You will recognize our educator team by their enthusiasm -- and their tie-dye!

Social Justice Workshop - This Sunday, September 8th

The Intersection of Racism and Anti-Semitism with Rabbi Mordechai Liebling and Graie Hagans at 10:00 AM 

An Elul opportunity to ask deep questions about society, and our place in it.  Join these two eminent facilitators in a workshop exploring how racism and anti-Semitism function (including how they divide people), how oppression gets internalized, and how white nationalism underlies both challenges.  Come join us; bring your own lunch (it goes until 4); RSVP still appreciated.  Click here to register.

Join Ms. Ellie for an energetic and joyful celebration of Shabbat that includes music, movement, storytelling and a Torah parade. Great fun for all kids and their adults. Grandparents welcome!


T'filah Shebalev at 11:00 AM
(Offsite at the C&O Canal Towpath, 7394 MacArthur Blvd)

T'filah Shebalev returns for a second season with a morning of walking and worship on the C&O Canal towpath. We will meet on MacArthur Blvd next to the single lane bridge.  

We'll walk for about an hour, round-trip, on the towpath. We'll share some prayers and some silence. Please feel free to bring a prayer or poem to share, wear comfortable shoes and your name tags. Once we get down to the towpath, it's flat and easy walking.

* Erev Rosh Hashanah, Sept 29 -- services at 5:00 pm, followed by catered dinner. Click here to RSVP and pay for dinner by September 24.

* Rosh Hashanah, Day One, Sept 30 -- in our communal home!  Meditation Circle with Fran Zamore and Larry Goldsmith at 9:30 AM; B'yachad Intergenerational Service at 10:30 AM; sermon on "Being Good Ancestors" from Rabbi Fred; and many other highlights.  Then at 4:00 pm, potluck Tashlich at the Cabin John Park Group Picnic Area, with eco-activities and games and fun for all ages

Rabbi Sid  will speak on Kol Nidre. His sermon is titled, "The Complicity Trap". Rabbi Hazzan Rachel will speak on Yom Kippur Morning. Her sermon is "Facing Anti-Semitism: Affirming Memory, Transcending Trauma".

Morning Meditation with Fran Zamore at 11:15 AM
      This hour-long meditation is appropriate for people new to meditation, as well as experienced meditators, with time for both meditation and discussion.  Congregant Fran Zamore (and friends) who has studied with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality and is a graduate of their Jewish Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program will lead these sessions.

Makom Healing Circle - Pathways to Forgiveness at 1:00 PM in the Sanctuary 
      As we prepare for the High Holidays, we are invited to gaze inwards with kindness and compassion and notice any unresolved issues. This healing circle will be an opportunity to look, reflect, and begin the process of untying these knots by cultivating forgiveness. (

S O C I A L   A C T I O N 
Friday, September 20 - Climate March at 11:00 AM
The Green Tikkun Committee and its Climate Action Working Group -- in concert with youth all over the world! -- encourage all Adat  Shalomers to be part of this global climate strike and march.  "To change everything, we need everyone!"   Click here to learn more.

Adat Shalom partners with Compost Crew to compost much of our oneg scraps.  
Over the summer we have been practicing composting. Look for the green bins in the Social Hall. Click here to   learn more about this initiative while we still feed our Mishna Garden compost.   We thank Amy Dick, Susan Wexler, and the Green Tikkun Committee for spearheading  this initiative .

Zichrono LiVracha- We join with the rest of the Washington area Jewish community in mourning the loss of Sheldon Grosberg, a friend to many in our community, and the founding Executive Director of Gan Zikaron -- the Garden of Remembrance -- our remarkable Jewish community cemetery.  He leaves a giant legacy, and will be sorely missed. Mazel Tov!  Susan Kimmel is delighted to announce the marriage of her son, Daniel Landay Kimmel, to Victoria Shantrell Asbury -- on September 7, 2019 in New York City.
