"Adversity is the vehicle that arouses the fears and doubts we need to face. Repeatedly dealing with the problem makes our intellectual perception 'knowledge of the heart.'"

by Carol Anthony

Greetings!

That feeling when everything hits all at once. I'm seeing it everywhere lately.

So many friends, clients, and family members are being pressed to their limits. I've certainly bumped into a few of mine too - and I know how disorienting it can feel when everything you thought was solid suddenly shifts.

AI is disrupting career paths, and no one knows how many fields will change. Some individuals have lost their jobs overnight. Recent graduates, degrees fresh in hand, find entry level positions vanishing. Information and technology sectors change at unfathomable speeds.

Yet for all that speed, we are still human, grappling with our vulnerabilities.

Several friends, grieving the loss of a loved one, feel as if their hearts are torn open, still walking but disconnected as they take on the next task. One client, confronted with her partner's dire diagnosis, must contend with planning the various scenarios as the disease progresses. Another is juggling unsatisfying work while also transitioning an elderly parent into assisted living.

These things can't be sped up.

Some individuals recognize their need to integrate AI into their businesses or workflow or be outpaced by the competition, intentionally take on personal growth. Steep learning curves and urgency flame the fires of their fears. Others take on self-improvement for health working on exercise routines, managing sleep, work-life balance, or expanding their circle of friends.

Change, even when self-imposed, can be hard and downright painful.

If we were able to ask a monarch butterfly going through metamorphosis whether it was easy and comfortable, I'm confident that the answer would be, "ah, no!" Since when does forming a chrysalis, changing your entire body form and squeezing your way to freedom and learning how to fly, sound like an easy job?!

In the process of transformation – we pass through darkness, ambiguity, and uncertainty.

Let me share what this looks like in real life. An artist client fell, cracked her head and suffered a severe concussion. For nearly a year she wrestled with headaches and dizziness, worried that she may never fully recover. Her protracted recovery, despite the very real upset and discomfort, forced valuable disciplines: healthy daily routines and invaluable mindsets. Working together, we discovered that her forced slowdown became a gateway to deeper creativity and trust. Now, years later, she successfully paints with complete appreciation and relishes the joy of process rather than only product. And, at times that journey felt like an endless uphill slog for her.

To those who might be lapsing into a moment of discouragement or need a few words of inspiration to get through those uncertain times, consider the following quote from A Guide to the I Ching (third edition by Carol Anthony): "Adversity is the vehicle that arouses the fears and doubts we need to face. Repeatedly dealing with the problem makes our intellectual perception 'knowledge of the heart.'"

How does this resonate with you?

In my practice, I've found that when clients can hold both the difficulty AND the possibility of growth, it makes enduring the hardship more bearable. They’re drawn forward. Their challenge can stimulate the need to dismantle limiting beliefs and open inner doors to newfound strength and self-confidence.

So how do we apply this wisdom when we are in the thick of it?

When you're in the darkness of your own chrysalis moment, you can allow yourself to imagine a dream of flight. You can make the next move to break the confines of today's habits or beliefs. The strength you develop in those dark transitions will serve you going forward.

With Love & Light,

Suzanne

September's Sip of Serenity from Oasis in the Overwhelm

Sip of Serenity Exercise

Is there something you're going through that has you pressed to the limit and stressed?

Here's what I guide my clients through when they're in these moments:

  1. Breathe: Take three slow breaths, inhaling for 4 counts, exhaling for 6 counts. Try to allow the breath to drop down, down, down, almost as if it's reaching your hips and lower back. Focus on how the air feels entering your nose. As you exhale, release your shoulders.
  2. Reflect: Can you hold the possibility that there are lessons and gifts that await you on your journey forward that will build your character, add to your wisdom, teach you something about yourself, another, or the world?
  3. Connect: Take a PAUSE. Imagine someone or something that you love. Really see them in your mind's eye.
  4. Ground: Identify one thing that is beautiful around you right now.
  5. Smile: Even for just five seconds. Notice any shift in how you feel - even the smallest sip of serenity.

Recognize that we are strung between warp speed and our human need to match the pace of our lived moments. Take the time to observe the lumbering flight of a bumble bee in autumn light. Or the slow magic of an orb spider spinning its web.

That is an Oasis.
