Boo is Back at Backus!
The Boo is Back! The A.E. Backus Museum’s favorite Halloween-themed benefit event returns on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on the Museum’s Outdoor Mural Plaza. Backus Boo Ball tickets are $50 each and are available online at www.BackusMuseum.org, or at the Museum at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce during regular hours.
“Boo ‘22” is the signature masquerade party with artsy-funky fun for adults. All attending ghosts and ghouls will be considered for the Costume Contest in one of seven categories including: Scariest (“Ultimate Nightmare”), Prettiest (“Wicked Beauty”), Funniest (“Scared Silly”), Most Original (“Unique Freak”), Best Couple (“Gruesome Twosome”), Best Classic Halloween (“Chiller Thriller”), and of course the People’s Choice Award rounding out an ominously delightful night. Cash prizes will be awarded this year, so come dressed in your spooktacular best.
Those who prowl the Outdoor Mural Plaza as the wolfsbane blooms and the moon is shining bright can plot to participate in the new “Creature Feature” Silent Auction with a host of special Jack-O-Lanterns and Pumpkins created by famed local artists. And if not a vampire, attendees can create special memories and capture their souls on film in Dorian Gray’s Photo Booth. Complimentary heavy munchies can be washed down by the fine selection of potions, poisons, and brews available at the cash bar. Scare away your troubles and enjoy live music by Jesse and The Thieves to get your Boo on in style … it will be a bloodcurdlingly boo-tiful bash for all.

The Backus Boo Ball is inspired by the artist A.E. “Bean” Backus’s legendary Halloween parties. In those days, younger friends of Backus were deputized to stage and host highly-anticipated gatherings every year that terrified and enchanted hundreds of guests. The Backus Boo Ball is inspired by that long ago tradition, and is today a classy return to a fun Halloween-themed party at the Museum for grown-ups.
It’s time to eat, drink, and be scary to benefit the Backus Museum! Tickets are $50. Get your tricked out disguise ready for your treats, but tickets are limited so get them before they’re gone! Check online at www.BackusMuseum.org/boo-ball or call the Museum at 772-465-0630.
| NOTE: The 2022-23 Backus season will open on October 8 with the annual juried exhibition The Best of the Best, continuing the institution’s longstanding commitment of encouraging both amateur and professional working artists. |

In a first-of-its-kind exhibition, the Cultural Council of Indian River County, in collaboration with the Vero Beach Museum of Art, presents Abstract Art: Conceptual Creativity, on view in the Patten Community Gallery September 9 through October 9, 2022.
As part of its Art in Public Places initiative, Cultural Council member artists were invited to submit 2D and 3D works of painting, drawing, ceramic, sculpture and mixed media in abstract style. Often under-represented and misunderstood, abstract art tends to focus on line, shape, texture and color expressions rather than realistic or representational art.
“Our member artists responded to the call with bold, creative and evocative works,” said Mark Wygonik, Administrator of the AIPP program. “The variety of abstract interpretations might have been a challenge for the Museum staff to showcase, but they’ve produced a stunning exhibit.”
|
There is no charge to visit the Education wing of the Museum and view the exhibit in the Patten Community Gallery. The Vero Beach Museum of Art hours are: Mondays, Closed, Tues. through Sat., 10 am to 4:30, Sun., 1 pm to 4 pm.
The Cultural Council’s Art in Public Places has four venues of exhibition, the Indian River County Courthouse, Indian River County Administration Buildings A and B, the Intergenerational Recreation Center and the Vero Beach Municipal Airport. New shows are rotated regularly every three months.
The Art in Public Places program is made possible through a grant from the Florida Department of State’s Division of Arts and Culture. The Division promotes the arts and culture as essential to quality of life for all Floridians.
The Cultural Council of Indian River County, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, promotes visual, literary and performing arts through education, collaboration, marketing and advocacy to enrich the lives of residents and visitors. It is the County’s designated arts agency. For more information, visit www.Cultural-Council.org or phone 772-770-4857.

From Rob Steele, Elliott Museum:
Elliott Museum is adding a very eclectic basket of music to our already robust repertoire at the Elliott Museum. Through a unique collaboration with Ron Hart at Earthtones, former owner of Terra Fermata, we will present six incredibly diverse offerings in the Museum's acoustically perfect Forum space.
The series is called "Troubadour Sessions," and the name is, by all counts, as intriguing as the musical acts themselves. "I spent 18 years as an impresario for performing arts centers and have booked over a thousand performances in my career. I fervently believe that if you can convince people to 'take a chance' on an act that seems outside their comfort zone, you can change the world for them.
"A troubador is one of a class of lyric poets and poet-musicians often of knightly rank who flourished from the 11th to the end of the 13th century, chiefly in the south of France and the north of Italy — and whose central theme was courtly love. Admittedly, many of these acts will not evoke the essence of a 13th-century minstrel…but the music will always be sublime. The Forum is a beautiful room, visually and acoustically, but seating will be limited to 75 guests for each exceptional performance. We hope to create a quality listening-room experiece for our guests fortunate enough to have a ticket."
