DERT Goes to DC!

We're sending Caroline & Mack to the upcoming Coastal & Estuarine Summit hosted by Restore America's Estuaries (RAE) to share our success story, connect with nationwide estuary restoration efforts, and show the nation how Olympia is transforming into an estuary city! DERT will be offering a 90-minute multimedia presentation entitled, "Restoring an Urban Estuary Through Cross-Cultural Organizing". It's not too late to join us there and hear from others doing similar work across the nation! Learn more about the summit here!

Celebrating a Success:

Festival of the st̓əč̓as

What an honor to collaborate on this event with the original stewards of the st̓əč̓as! Together with the Squaxin Island Tribe, all of our incredible participants, the support of our sponsors, and some truly stellar volunteers, we put on the 2nd Festival of the Steh-Chass (st̓əč̓as) on August 17th at Heritage Park.

This was a truly special day which began with welcoming words from Squaxin Island Tribal Chairman Kris Peters, our very own DERT founder and treasurer Sue Patnude, and Squaxin Island Museum, Library and Research Center Director Charlene Krise. What followed was a day full of cultural exchange, storytelling, music, crafts, food, and so much more. The day ended with the Healing of the Waters Ceremony at the 5th Ave Dam. We are so incredibly grateful for everyone who came together to make this event happen in celebration of the Deschutes estuary cultural & ecological restoration and the 50th Anniversary of the Judge Boldt Decision. THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE INVOLVED!

Have you seen the updated visual renderings of the Deschutes estuary restoration? Check more of these out on the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) Deschutes Estuary Restoration Project website. DES has completed conceptual (15%) design for estuary restoration, with 30% design expected to be complete by the end of the year. Throughout conceptual design, DES engaged with design partners, including the Squaxin Island Tribe, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the City of Olympia, and solicited input from the public through public meetings. We encourage you to sign up for the project newsletter via the project website to get the most up to date information on the project and the upcoming public meeting.

NEWS IN THE WATERSHED

DES hears Port’s concerns over shared dredging costs of Deschutes Estuary project

"The project partners will share the costs of the dredging activities, so a payment schedule was developed to see how much each of the partners will contribute annually until 2050, which is when the proposed agreement terminates."

"The overall dredging cost is projected at $66.4 million. Reich mentioned that this amount is based on 2022 dollars, with an annual 4.5% increase factored in until 2050."

Check out what a new bridge and restored estuary could look like in downtown Olympia

"What it will be like to drive from one side of Olympia to the other once Capitol Lake is restored to an estuary? Now you can visualize it with renderings of the new Fifth Avenue Bridge and the conceptual design of the Deschutes Estuary."

"During the City of Olympia’s Sea Level Rise Response meeting Sept. 6, Ann Larson with DES gave an update on what was found when Capitol Lake was drained this summer, and how that information will help the design process."

Support for Deschutes Restoration and Community Engagement was provided by the Puget Sound Stewardship and Mitigation Fund, a grantmaking fund enabled by Waste Action Project and other Clean Water Act advocates’ program to protect the health of Puget Sound and its residents by enforcing federal water quality laws against serious violators. The Fund’s goal is to mitigate past pollution runoff by supporting community-based efforts to protect or improve the water quality of Puget Sound. The Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment administers the Fund to enable community-based watershed stewardship in close nexus with the specifics of the enabling settlements.
