Suicide, Mental Health, Drug Use, and Overdose: A Confluence of Risk Factors

By Iris Smith, Ph.D.

In 2024, 14.3 million people in the U.S. experienced suicidal ideation, 4.6 million planned a suicide attempt, and 48,824 died by suicide. In 2024 the rate of suicide deaths among U.S. adolescents and teens 15-19 years old was 9.4%. State rates vary considerably from 5.67% in the District of Columbia to 29.78% in Alaska.1

At the individual level, mental health problems, particularly depression and anxiety, are often precursors to suicidal ideation and attempts in young people. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics National Health Survey indicated that between 2021 and 2023, 19.7% of youth 12-17 reported symptoms of anxiety in the past two weeks, 17.8% reported symptoms of depression, and 19.5 % reported that they needed mental health services or counseling in the past year but were unable to obtain it.2 Youth with a previous psychiatric history, diagnosis of psychosis, admission to a mental health treatment program, prior suicidal behavior, or a family history of fatal suicide attempts may be at elevated risk.3
