September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Here are some staggering, sad, hard facts about the prevalence of suicide in the US:

  • Americans attempt suicide more than a million times in a year (Centers for Disease Control, 2012)
  • Sadly, 90% of those individuals had a diagnosable disorder at the time (Lethbridge-Çejku, Rose, & Vickerie, 2006)

Our Muslim community is not immune. Many of our friends, family, mentors, and leaders struggle silently with suicidal thoughts every day. They are in need of love and support. The stigma around mental health and suicide has prevented much-needed research on the prevalence of suicide within the Muslim community. Each of us can help change that.

The Family & Youth Institute has developed a Prevention Tool Kit, it can be found here:

Engaging with Parents & Youths at Middle School Outreach Event

On Thursday, August 28th, MAS-SSF joined families and students at Katherine Johnson Middle School’s “Back to School” night in Sacramento. We were happy to connect one-one with parents, students, and school staff to share information on our services such as newcomer services, youth mentorships, student workshops, school enrollment guidance, and academic support. KJMS serves a largely diverse population encompassing more than 600 students in grades six through eight.

During the event, our team distributed popular giveaways—stress balls, sticky notes, pens, and snacks—while engaging in meaningful conversations with more than 50 parents and students.

School staff also connected with us to discuss the unique needs of multilingual learners and explored ways MAS-SSF and the school can collaborate to help students thrive.
