Eco-Friendly Tips of the Month
Chuck Golden

Each month, as part of this newsletter, I am going to share with you my ideas that may work for you as you strive to be more environmentally sustainable.

Operational Practices to Exhibit

Environmental Sustainability

Every Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer is working toward being as environmentally responsible as possible. What are the operational practices a Subaru retailer can use to exhibit environmental sustainability? Retail facilities can adopt a variety of additional operational practices to exhibit their commitment to environmental sustainability. Here are some effective strategies:

Energy Management

1. Smart Energy Systems: Implement smart energy management systems to monitor and optimize energy usage in real-time.

2. LED Lighting: Replace traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED lights throughout the retail facility.

3. Motion Sensors: Install motion sensors in less frequently used areas to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.

Water Conservation

1. Rainwater Harvesting: Set up systems to collect and use rainwater for landscaping and car washing.

2. Low-Flow Fixtures: Install low-flow faucets and toilets to reduce water usage.

3. Water Recycling: Use water recycling systems in car wash facilities to minimize water waste.

Waste Management

1. Composting: Implement composting programs for organic waste generated by the retail facility.

2. E-Waste Recycling: Properly dispose of electronic waste through certified e-waste recycling programs.

3. Paperless Operations: Transition to digital documentation and communication to reduce paper waste.

Sustainable Procurement

1. Eco-Friendly Products: Source and use eco-friendly cleaning supplies, office materials, and automotive products.

2. Local Suppliers: Partner with local suppliers to reduce transportation emissions and support the local economy.

3. Recycled Materials: Use recycled materials for promotional items, office supplies, and even vehicle parts when possible.

Employee Engagement

1. Green Training Programs: Provide training for employees on sustainable practices and the importance of environmental stewardship.

2. Incentive Programs: Create incentive programs to reward employees for contributing to sustainability goals.

3. Sustainability Committees: Have a working Green Team to oversee and promote green initiatives within the retail facility.

Customer Involvement

1. Green Loyalty Programs: Offer loyalty programs that reward customers for choosing eco-friendly options, such as electric vehicles or participating in recycling programs.

2. Sustainability Workshops: Host workshops and events to educate customers about sustainable practices and the benefits of green vehicles.

3. Eco-Friendly Services: Provide services like eco-friendly car washes and maintenance options that use biodegradable products.

Technology Integration

1. Digital Marketing: Focus on digital marketing strategies to reduce the environmental impact of traditional advertising methods.

By integrating these additional operational practices, retail facilities can further demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability, attract eco-conscious customers, and contribute positively to the community and the planet.

Cole Subaru -- Bluefield, WV

National Cut Your Energy Costs Day

Cole Subaru, in Bluefield, WV, encouraged their customers and followers, via social media, to observe National Cut Your Energy Costs Day this past winter by posting the above graphic and offering the following tips:

"Here are some simple tips to save electricity and reduce our carbon footprint:

  • Switch to LED Bulbs: They use less energy and last longer. A bright idea for a sustainable future!
  • Unplug Devices: Don't forget to unplug chargers and electronics when not in use. Standby mode still consumes energy!
  • Natural Light Power: Open curtains during the day to let in natural light. It's free, and it's the most eco-friendly lighting source!
  • Energy-Efficient Appliances: Upgrade to appliances with the Energy Star label. They're designed to be more efficient and save power.
  • Smart Thermostats: Control your home's temperature efficiently. Lower the heat in winter and raise it in summer when you're away.
  • Buy an electric vehicle: Electric motors are more energy-efficient than internal combustion engines, converting a higher percentage of stored energy into vehicle movement."

How's that last bullet point for stimulating consumer interest in the Subaru Solterra EV?

The next National Cut Your Energy Costs Day is January 10, 2025. It's not too early to start thinking about how to promote this event at your retail facility by showcasing the steps you have taken (refer to your statistics in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager) and by making your customers aware of actions they can consider to lower utility costs at home:

  1. Switch to Energy-Efficient LED Bulbs
  2. Install Programmable Thermostats
  3. Consider Rooftop Solar Panels
  4. Try an Air-Source Heat Pump
  5. Get a Professional Home Energy Audit

On National Cut Your Energy Costs Day, individuals and businesses alike are encouraged to take proactive steps to reduce their energy consumption and save on utility bills. This annual observance serves as a reminder of the importance of energy efficiency, not only for financial savings but also for the health of our planet. By implementing simple changes, such as outlined above, everyone can contribute to a more sustainable future while enjoying the benefits of reduced energy cost.

W&L Subaru -- Northumberland, PA

Recycled Water Car Wash

W&L Subaru in Northumberland, PA, "walks the talk" to make good on one of the tenets, water conservation, of being a Certified Eco-Friendly Retailer. "W&L Subaru goes above and beyond to be an eco-friendly retailer. From using energy-efficient LED lighting to implementing a clever water recycling system for their car wash, they're committed to reducing their environmental footprint. Recycling is a priority, encompassing everything from customer lounge materials to oil filters and even the plastic wrapping on new vehicles. They've even found a way to turn used oil into heat, further reducing their reliance on conventional resources. W&L Subaru's dedication extends beyond their own operations, as they actively seek partnerships within the community to make a positive environmental impact together."

.

In an era where environmental conservation is paramount, switching to recycled water not only drastically cuts down on water usage but also positions your retail facility as a leader in eco-friendly practices. This method not only meets the growing demand from consumers who prioritize green choices but also showcases your commitment to protecting our planet by drastically reducing the consumption of fresh water. A recycled water system car wash can attract environmentally conscious customers to your showroom and play a vital role in reducing the ecological footprint of the service department and the entire retail facility. Additionally, the implementation of such systems can result in substantial cost savings on water bills, ultimately benefiting your bottom line. Recycled water car washes enhance the offerings in your service department and also play a vital role in promoting environmental stewardship in your community.
